"Eye creams are specially designed for the delicate skin around the eyes, which is why they tend to be richer and thicker," explains dermatologist Stacy Chimento, MD. "These creams often contain more oils than regular facial creams and include targeted ingredients to address specific concerns."
Whether you're new to eye creams or have been using them for years, be mindful of these common mistakes that could be undermining your anti-aging efforts.
1. Believing a regular moisturizer will do the job
As Dr. Chimento points out, eye creams are specifically created for the sensitive skin around your eyes. A regular moisturizer simply won't provide the same targeted benefits.
"Many of my clients come to me concerned about fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles, but when I ask them what they’re using, they often say 'nothing' or 'just moisturizer,'" says esthetician Kasey Boone. "While moisturizer is great for hydration, if you want to treat the eye area, you need a dedicated eye cream!"
2. Overusing the product
Ever notice how small eye cream jars are? There's a reason they aren't sold in bulk sizes. A small amount is all that's needed, and using too much might even have the opposite effect.
"Some think that using more product will yield better results. But when it comes to the delicate under-eye area, less is truly more," says Dr. Chimento. "Applying too much can block your pores or even seep into your eyes, causing irritation." A pea-sized portion is all you need.
3. Failing to let the product absorb
"It's essential to allow any product applied to your skin enough time to fully absorb. Let it settle for a few minutes to really experience its benefits," advises Dr. Chimento.
This means avoiding layering too many products in a short amount of time, such as adding extra skincare, makeup (like concealer for dark under-eye circles), or sunscreen on top. And if you're heading to bed, ensure you give your eye cream enough time to fully absorb before lying down, or you risk transferring the product onto your pillow.
4. Applying too close to your eyes
You should avoid applying eye cream directly onto your eyelids or too near the lash line. This increases the chance of getting the product in your eyes, which can be quite uncomfortable. "As your body temperature rises, the product can move on its own," explains Dr. Chimento. "There's no need to apply it too near the eye, as it could cause irritation." Instead, focus on the orbital bone and the area beneath your eyes.
5. Using the wrong finger to apply it
Yes, the finger you use to apply your eye cream actually matters. Dermatologists agree that your ring finger is the most ideal choice, as it’s the weakest. Gently tap—never pull—the cream with your fourth finger to ensure you're applying it precisely where it’s needed, without putting excessive pressure on that delicate skin.
6. Contaminating the cream
Many eye creams are packaged in charming pots. While it may be tempting to dip your finger into the jar, this can introduce bacteria into the product. Instead, use a cotton swab or a clean metal applicator to remove the cream and apply it to your skin. If your eye cream has a pump, dispense it onto your (fourth!) fingertip instead of directly touching the nozzle. Keeping the cream clean helps preserve its effectiveness and extend its lifespan, while also preventing irritation.
7. Expecting immediate results
While certain eye creams may offer instant plumping effects and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, it often takes some time to notice long-term improvements. Just like you wouldn't expect a dramatic change after only a few gym sessions, consistent use of your eye cream is essential to achieve its full benefits.
Boone mentions that many of her clients express frustration with "trying everything," but upon further questioning, they often admit they've only been using an eye cream for a few days or weeks.
"Give your eye cream time—at least 30 to 60 days," she suggests. "Also, keep in mind that eye creams aren't magic, [so don't expect an overnight miracle]. With consistent use, you can see significant improvements, especially if you're using the right eye cream for your specific concern."
Patience and persistence lead to the best results with eye cream.
