Whether you're hitting the gym, going for a run, hiking, or heading to yoga, there's no underestimating the boost that comes with looking and feeling your best. A stylish workout hairstyle not only helps with that but also ensures your hair stays in place, letting you focus on hitting your personal goals. From sophisticated buns (pun intended) to creative twists on the classic ponytail, we've curated a list of gym-ready hairstyles for everyone.
1. Braided and Knotted Bun
For those with thick hair tackling an intense workout like a HIIT class or a run, this sleek updo is your best bet. 'It stays out of your face, and you won’t have to worry about it coming loose,' says NYC celebrity hairstylist Christina Giarrizzo. 'To get the look, use a strong hairspray or gel to pull your hair back into a ponytail, then braid the remaining hair. Wrap the braids into a bun and secure them with an elastic band or soft scrunchy.'
2. Double Dutch Braids
This quick, two-minute hairstyle is perfect for keeping hair out of your way during a workout. It involves creating two inverted French braids on either side of your head and securing them at the bottom. 'This is a step above a simple braid, and it creates a playful pattern,' says Sarah Potempa, celebrity stylist and founder of Beachwaver. 'As an added bonus, once you take out the braids, you'll have a fun, textured wave pattern in your hair!'
3. Claw Clip and Hat
Trying to save your blowout? We've got you covered. 'This hairstyle is ideal for a low-impact workout like Pilates,' Giarrizzo says. 'To recreate it, grab your favorite hat to keep hair out of your face, and then use a claw clip to twist your hair up and secure it in place with the hat so it stays put.'
4. Center-Parted Slick Bun
This sleek, slicked-back bun is the perfect go-to for those low-maintenance days—or when you’re trying to make your shampoo last one more day. 'Using a tight bristle or boar bristle brush, part your hair about two to four inches back from your hairline,' advises hairstylist Katie Kopach. 'Brush everything slightly downward and backward toward where you’ll position your ponytail. Finish it off by throwing it into a messy bun for a perfect 'gym hair, don’t care' look!'
5. French-Braided Bun
This one’s a little more sophisticated, but if you’re aiming to impress—or know a ton of photos are coming your way—this is one of the most stylish workout hairstyles to try. 'A braided bun is a cute and simple way to enhance a standard slicked-back bun,' says Potempa. After braiding your hair, form a low bun and wrap the braid around the base before pinning it in place. A touch of hairspray will ensure everything stays put.'
6. High Rope Braid
Whether you're swinging ropes in the gym or pushing through a cycling class, a classic rope braid is a must-try hairstyle for your workout. Potempa explains, 'This is an effortless way to upgrade your basic ponytail. I love a style that looks way more intricate than it really is, and this one is super easy but looks complex.' Begin by pulling your hair into a high ponytail, split it into two sections, and twist each section to the right. Then twist both sections together and secure them in place.
7. French Bubble Braid
For a playful variation on traditional braids, try the trendy bubble braid. Kopach mentions it appears more complicated than it really is, so don’t be intimidated (just like you wouldn’t hesitate to try heavier weights at the gym).
'Part your hair into two sections and make sure to have plenty of rubber bands on hand,' suggests Kopach. 'Start by taking a section from the top of your eyebrow to the top of your part and create a ponytail right in the center of that section.' Continue with large or small sections based on your preference. Once you have all the rubber bands in place, gently pull on the sections to give them a puffed-up look.'
