Looking for a quick way to refresh your wardrobe this season? Changing your handbag is one of the easiest ways to do so. A simple swap can give your favorite pair of jeans or everyday jacket a fresh, new feel. Plus, no other fashion item retains its value like a good purse, making it a great investment. With so many choices out there, how do you pick the perfect one—and how should you style it? We turned to fashion stylists and handbag experts to share the top handbag trends for fall 2024, from shapes and designs to colors and textures.
1. Hobo

The hobo bag is more popular than ever this season, as confirmed by celebrity fashion stylist Brooke Rounick. “Oversized hobo bags are making a comeback with the resurgence of boho style, boasting relaxed silhouettes that offer plenty of space for all your essentials,” she explains. “These bags pair effortlessly with flowing tops and dresses, as well as classic vintage denim, creating a perfect blend of casual chicness.”
Stylist and author Lindsey Bernay, known for You Can't Leave the House Naked, recommends styling hobo bags with laid-back jeans, a crisp white button-up shirt, and loafers or mules. “It’s the epitome of Jane Birkin-inspired street fashion,” she suggests.
2. Tote

Looking for a versatile, timeless bag that transitions seamlessly from work to happy hour? A tote bag has got you covered. While this style is perfect for all seasons, it's especially in vogue right now. “Tote bags are the ultimate fall accessory, offering both practicality and flair. Whether you're packing your work essentials or prepping for a weekend trip, it's all you need,” says Bernay. “Pair your tote with a cozy cashmere sweater, sleek cigarette pants, and a longline blazer for a chic, modern travel look.”
3. Bowling

If totes aren’t your style, fashion expert Christina Adamo recommends opting for a bowling bag. “A bowling bag or top-handle style is a refreshed alternative to the classic work tote. These bags are made to withstand daily use—perfect for your busy lifestyle. Pair it with a floor-length coat, a tailored blazer, and slingbacks or loafers for a polished finish,” she advises.
4. Lady Bags

Lady bags are undeniably in vogue right now. If you're considering splurging, Rounick affirms that these classic bags are a smart choice. “They exude understated elegance and timeless appeal. With their structured shape and refined details, they effortlessly elevate both casual and formal outfits,” she says.
For a daytime look, tone it down by pairing the lady bag with high-waisted dark jeans, a cozy knit sweater, and loafers for a stylish yet casual ensemble.
5. Mini

Who says good things don’t come in small packages? “The mini bag is a fantastic way to spice up your outfit—think of it as arm candy! Whether it's a top-handle vanity bag or a wristlet, it’s perfect for any occasion (as long as you don’t need to carry much),” explains Adamo. “It’s the ideal accessory to elevate your look—pair it with a maxi skirt, a slinky top, and over-the-knee boots for a chic date night vibe.”
6. Chocolate Brown

“Chocolate brown is making a comeback this fall and still exudes luxury and richness,” says Emily Hayward, associate VP at Minor History. “It’s a warmer neutral compared to gray or black, making it perfect for the cooler months. Opting for a chocolate brown handbag is a small yet impactful way to embrace this trend.”
Unsure about which material to choose? Rounick recommends suede for a timeless option. “Whether you're dressing up a simple jeans-and-tee outfit or a tonal brown look, a brown suede bag is dominating the fashion world. Its rich, earthy tones add a natural touch to any outfit, making it a versatile choice for nearly any occasion,” she says.
7. Burgundy

If you're considering opting for a fresh color, Hayward insists that burgundy is a must-have for fall. “This deep yet dependable color takes a step away from last season’s bold red and pairs effortlessly with both casual and formal styles. It embodies a sense of polished elegance, and handbags in this shade bring an added level of sophistication to any outfit,” she says.
