While it might not be the news you want to hear, Labor Day is just around the corner. If you're eager to embrace the fall season and make the most of the long weekend, consider dedicating a few hours to tidying up and organizing your space. This doesn’t mean you have to part with every single item in your home, but it’s a practical way to use your time. Here’s a guide on what to clear out this Labor Day weekend.
Pantry Goods
If your summer included frequent trips to Costco, your pantry might be in need of a thorough cleanup, as suggested by Kenzie Harkey, founder of Simply Dare and a professional organizer. “Go through your pantry to remove any expired or spoiled items that are just taking up space,” she advises. “This will free up room for fresh groceries as you gear up for more home-cooked meals this autumn.”
Refrigerated Items
The refrigerator often becomes a black hole for forgotten leftovers. From that experimental yogurt flavor you never tasted (now past its prime) to that single piece of broccoli languishing in a container, it’s time to clear things out. “Fridges packed with food, leftovers, and condiments make it easy to lose track of what’s inside,” says Harkey. “Decluttering and cleaning your fridge every few months ensures it stays fresh and free of harmful bacteria.”
Command Center Clutter
Prepare your kids for school by organizing your command center. “As the school year kicks off, take the time to reset your command center, which usually includes a family calendar and a mail drop zone,” she explains. “A clutter-free space here means you’ll start the school year feeling organized and in control.”

Your entryway and closet likely need a thorough decluttering as well. “Entry closets often house coats, backpacks, shoes, and sometimes cleaning supplies, pet items, or stroller equipment if you have little ones,” Harkey notes. Remove anything that no longer fits or is rarely used.
Medicine Cabinet Products
Is it worth keeping that nearly empty sunscreen bottle, especially when it’s about to expire? If you’re committed to decluttering, don’t stop halfway. Inspect your bathroom for expired items, nearly empty containers, and summer products you didn’t enjoy, like that unpleasant bug spray.
Summer Gear
Is there a tear in your pool float? Why is it still taking up space in the garage? Have your kids grown out of their swim goggles? Donate or toss them. Those frayed beach towels have served their purpose. Don’t hold onto broken or outdated summer items until next Memorial Day—clear them out now.
Damaged Clothes
Did your go-to white shirt fall victim to a wine spill? If it’s beyond saving, it’s time to let it go. That tennis dress you tore during pickleball? Replace it during the upcoming Labor Day sale. Declutter unworn sweaters, jackets, and other fall attire to free up room for new additions. While it might be tough, the reward is a more organized wardrobe.
