Massimo Listri's The World's Most Beautiful Libraries takes readers on a captivating visual journey through the planet's most awe-inspiring sanctuaries dedicated to literature.
While many contemporary public libraries lack aesthetic appeal, their shelves house countless books filled with fascinating worlds. Historically, however, libraries were constructed as majestic, palatial havens for books. “Libraries have always been symbols of prestige, reflecting both artistic and architectural brilliance,” writes librarian and scholar Georg Ruppelt in an essay for The World's Most Beautiful Libraries, a new book featuring stunning photographs by Italian artist Massimo Listri. “These repositories of knowledge have inspired both secular and spiritual leaders since the Early Modern Era to invest heavily in their design and ornamentation.” Here are seven of the most visually striking libraries featured in the book.
