That said, if your bathroom is starting to feel a little tired, it might be time for an upgrade. Here are seven reasons your bathroom could seem outdated—and some ideas for giving it a more modern touch.
You Still Have a Medicine Cabinet
A bathroom can quickly feel outdated with the presence of a traditional medicine cabinet sitting next to your vanity mirror, says designer Robin Baab Olascoaga. "I’m not dismissing the practicality of a medicine cabinet, but there are now so many streamlined and updated versions incorporated into vanity mirrors that blend both utility and aesthetics," she notes. "Consider removing the visible side mirror and instead opt for a vanity medicine cabinet or hide the door behind the same material as your wall for a seamless appearance.”
Although a medicine cabinet provides some storage space, it may not be the best choice for larger items. A better option could be installing a more spacious vanity with drawers and shelves for additional room.
Your Walls Are Tiled with Solid Squares
“Avoid using solid square tiles at all costs,” advises Chelsea Marks, co-owner of Paynes Gray. “Even if you come across a textured tile that you think could work—don't use it.” She suggests opting for staggered or patterned tiles as a better alternative.
For a timeless and versatile design that is still simple, a herringbone pattern in either marble or ceramic tiles is an excellent option.
There’s Subway Tile
For years, subway tile was everywhere—whether at your friend's new place or a trendy eatery. It became so ubiquitous that it’s now starting to feel a bit outdated. "Subway tile is out," Marks admits. "Sorry, but I have to say it. It can still work if executed well, but in five years, it will undoubtedly seem out of place—I guarantee it.”
Today, with a wide array of shapes and styles of tile available, there are endless opportunities to get creative without resorting to subway tile.
Accent Tiles Are Stealing the Show
Tile borders and accent strips may have been all the rage a few years ago, but now they can give your bathroom a dated appearance. “Continuous tiling with no interruptions, or bold statement walls featuring large tiles or unique patterns, are the more modern options,” says interior designer Amy Switzer.
That doesn't mean your bathroom needs to be entirely neutral, though. "If your bathroom feels like a sea of beige, from the tiles to the paint, it's time to bring in some contrast," she advises. "A splash of color, a bold vanity, or even a statement mirror can inject the space with much-needed energy."
The Bathmat Is Fuzzy
Fuzzy bath mats may feel pleasant on your feet, but they're seriously outdated and can be a bit unhygienic. "I shouldn't have to mention this, but never use carpet in a bathroom," Marks warns. "Even a shaggy bath mat is a big no. Not only does it remind you of 1978, but the thought of that shaggy rug absorbing water day after day is revolting."
If you prefer something soft underfoot, choose a washable memory foam bathmat instead. It will look more modern and still provide that cozy comfort.
Your Cabinets Are Dark Wood
Dark wood cabinetry was all the rage for a decade, but Switzer points out that it can make a bathroom feel heavy and outdated. "Lighter tones, floating vanities, or sleek matte finishes align better with modern design trends," she explains.
If you prefer dark hues in your bathroom, choose bold dark tiles or deep-toned wallpaper, but keep the cabinetry light to avoid overwhelming the space.
The Light Fixtures Are Too Heavy
Changing out light fixtures is one of the easiest ways to refresh a bathroom. "Heavy, traditional fixtures with elaborate details can quickly make a bathroom feel dated," says Switzer. She recommends reassessing your bathroom's lighting setup and swapping outdated fixtures for minimalist, sleek, or matte black designs to give the space a fresh feel. "Those rows of round bulbs scream the '90s," she adds. "Switching to modern sconces or backlit mirrors will instantly update the room."
