Interestingly, it's not the grand features like marble floors or expansive soaking tubs that truly transform the space. Instead, it's the smaller, thoughtful additions that make a real difference. Here are eight essential items every bathroom should have, as recommended by interior designers.
Handheld Showerhead
Interior designer Jack Ovadia of Ovadia Design Group emphasizes that a handheld shower is a must-have in every bathroom. He states, “It effortlessly combines practicality with aesthetics, and it’s also the perfect tool for cleaning your shower or bathing kids and pets when necessary.”
This is typically a simple swap and doesn’t require extensive plumbing skills. Simply remove your existing showerhead and replace it. If you're concerned, you can always hire a professional or find a tutorial online to guide you.
Countertop Organization
Whether you’re an avid beauty enthusiast or just prefer to leave a few essentials like soap dispensers or moisturizers on display, Ovadia suggests that having organizers is crucial in every bathroom. “Maintain a clean and orderly space with organizers that offer specific spots for your toiletries and must-have items,” says Ovadia.
However, interior designer Emma Beryl advises that clear plastic organizers are not the only option. She prefers ceramic canisters, which add an elegant touch and a bit of personality to your bathroom countertop.
A small, decorative serving tray you might already have lying around can also work wonders for organizing your bathroom essentials.
Plush Towels
Regardless of your bathroom’s design theme, Beryl insists that every bathroom should have plush towels. “A super soft towel after a shower is like receiving a much-needed embrace. Pottery Barn's organic towels are exceptional, available in various sizes and timeless colors.”
Don’t forget to personalize your towels with a monogram. Even something as simple as monogramming your hand towels can elevate their style and make a noticeable difference.
Robe Hook
Ovadia recommends that every bathroom should have a robe hook, which is both simple to install and practical. “Placing a robe hook near the shower or bath is not only handy but ensures your robe is within reach, helping to keep your bathroom free from unnecessary dampness,” he explains.
Whether you choose a basic hook or a more intricate and decorative one, it’s a great addition to the bathroom.
Exhaust Fan
A damp, steamy bathroom that refuses to dry can be frustrating. “An efficient exhaust fan is vital for removing moisture and preventing mold growth in your bathroom,” Ovadia reveals.
If installing an exhaust fan isn’t possible, especially in a rented home, simply opening a window while showering or bathing can help reduce moisture.
Good Lighting
Ovadia suggests, “Proper lighting from sconces or built-in mirror lights not only improves visibility but adds a sophisticated flair to your bathroom. Placing sconces on either side of the mirror creates a welcoming atmosphere, while mirror-integrated lights provide a sleek, modern touch.”
Beryl also appreciates the charm of sconces. “Not only are sconces a great way to create ambiance, but they’re also more practical than overhead lighting, helping to eliminate the harsh shadows often cast by ceiling-mounted lights.”
Electric Outlets
A bathroom with insufficient or poorly placed outlets can be incredibly frustrating—whether you're trying to charge your electric toothbrush, dry your hair, or plug in your phone.
Ovadia suggests placing one outlet above the counter near the sink and another inside the medicine cabinet. “Having outlets in the medicine cabinet offers a hidden solution for charging devices, keeping the space tidy and uncluttered,” he explains.
Toilet Paper Holder with a Small Shelf
Let’s face it—we all check our phones while sitting on the toilet. Ovadia recommends upgrading to a toilet paper holder with a small shelf to hold your phone. This upgrade doesn’t have to be expensive; affordable yet stylish options are available on Amazon.
