But before the season sets in, it’s a good idea to get a jump on preparing your home by cleaning and organizing. Ready for a productive laundry day? Here are eight things to wash before winter.
Winter Garments
Begin by laundering your winter wardrobe—including sweaters and wool pants—before the season kicks off, suggests Shantae Duckworth, a professional home organizer. “If you’re in an area with noticeable seasonal shifts or planning to engage in winter sports in the mountains, starting with freshly cleaned clothes is a smart way to prepare,” she shares. “It’s also the perfect opportunity to inspect items for any wear and tear, replacing them if necessary, so you’re completely ready for the upcoming season.”
Winter Coats
Do you recall spilling hot chocolate on your winter coat last year? Or that moment with the adorable, fluffy puppy? If you didn’t send your coat to the cleaners last season or wash the machine-washable ones, they’ll probably need some attention before the temperatures really drop. After all, you don’t want to be caught unprepared in the cold with a soiled coat.
Winter Bedding
If you live in a colder climate, chances are you have winter-specific bedding like thicker comforters or flannel sheets—and they need a proper wash too. “Winter bedding items are perfect for pulling out and laundering,” Duckworth recommends. “Since these items are only used for three to four months each year, depending on where you live and the changes in seasons, they’ve likely been stored away for months and are due for a good refresh.”
According to professional organizer Kris Hargrover, unless your winter linens were sealed in airtight containers or zipper bags, they’re likely to have collected dust. She explains, 'A surprising amount of dust can gather on clothes and blankets stored in the closet, which could trigger severe allergic reactions.' Starting the winter season with clean, dust-free items offers a much cozier experience. Consider getting storage bins for next year if you suffer from allergies.
Down or Down-Alternative Comforters
When was the last time your comforter was thoroughly cleaned? Make sure to wash it separately in the washing machine. While it’s common to think that down comforters require professional dry cleaning, that's not necessarily the case. If your machine has a bedding cycle, use it, or opt for the delicate setting if it doesn’t.
Throw Blankets
There’s nothing better than snuggling by the fireplace with that Christmas quilt your grandmother made or the weighted blanket you received as a gift. While they were likely packed away for the summer, it’s quite possible you didn’t wash them before storing. So why not clean them up before your next movie night?
Washable Rugs
After summer beach outings and walking on crunchy autumn leaves, your washable rugs might have gathered more dirt than you realize. While you’re tackling the laundry, don’t forget to toss those rugs in the washing machine for a deep clean.
Vacuum Roll
When was the last time you cleaned your vacuum roll? For many people, the answer is never. (No judgment here.) If your vacuum has a removable brush roll, it’s probably packed with dust, dirt, and hair. Take it out and soak it overnight for a thorough cleanse, or wash it on the delicate cycle of your washing machine (as long as there’s no agitator).
Window Treatments
When was the last time you gave your curtains a good cleaning? Yikes! It's time to wash them thoroughly before the new season rolls in. If they’re machine-washable, take them down from the rod and toss them in the washing machine. If not, set them aside to take to the dry cleaners.
