Whether you're struggling to find space for your new conditioner or simply want the area to feel more like a luxurious spa, here are eight items to clear out from your shower right now.
Products You're Sensitive To
If it caused a rash, whether it's your sugar scrub or shaving cream, you likely won't want to use it again. So why let these items take up valuable space? Either dispose of anything you're allergic to or pass it on to a friend with less sensitive skin.
Nearly-Used-Up Products
Apologies for the tough love, but if your conditioning mask can't provide a full treatment and has been sitting there for weeks or months, it's probably time to toss it and buy a fresh one. Go through all your shampoos, exfoliators, masks, and other products, and if they’re almost empty—and you’re not likely to finish them—it’s time to let them go.
The Diminishing Bar Soap
If you prefer body wash, that small sliver of bar soap that disappears little by little with every shower will never get fully used. So why let it sit there, accumulating soap scum and making your shower shelf look messy? Either finish it off or toss it.
Nearly Full Products You Didn’t Enjoy
Get rid of that barely-used shampoo or conditioner that left your hair feeling dry, or the cucumber shower gel that made you smell like a Greek salad. 'It won’t change, and it’s taking up valuable space for products that may actually work for you,' says Kat Green, ADHD organizing specialist and coach, and founder of Badass Homelife LLC. 'Consider donating it to your local Buy Nothing Group, but let them know it didn’t work for you so they’re aware.'
Skincare Tools You Never Use
You may have had high hopes for that dry brush you saw on TikTok, but if it didn’t meet your expectations, it’s okay to part ways with it—or any skincare tool that doesn’t fit into your routine. 'If you haven’t used that pumice stone since 2022, it’s time to reconsider its place in your space,' says Green. 'Either give it another try and use it, or toss it. If it hasn’t been stored correctly, it’s probably best to throw it out. Letting go of unused items helps keep your space organized and refreshed.'
Outdated Razors
If that old razor cuts you, why is it still sitting in your shower, rusting away? If just the thought of using it again brings to mind a scene from a horror movie, it’s time to say goodbye—especially if you've already replaced it.
Your Worn-Out Shower Caddy
Shower caddies and shelves aren’t meant to last forever. If yours is old, falling apart, or can’t support your current products, it’s time to part ways and treat yourself to something fresh.
The Drain
'Another spot to declutter is the drain. Hair, skin, and other debris can accumulate, leading to clogs. To clear it, try using a vinegar and baking soda mixture,' says Green. 'This simple solution can help restore space and improve drainage.'
If your drain is filled with hair or draining slower than before, it might be clogged. You may want to try a stronger drain cleaner or call a plumber if necessary.
