Read McKendree for Henry & Co. DesignIf you’ve noticed an increase in gaming over the past year, you’re certainly not alone. More people are looking for ways to unwind and connect without screens, and that competitive edge is beginning to influence our interior designs.
“Many of my clients are requesting a cozy nook for games and puzzles, often in corners of their spaces that were once overlooked,” says designer Stephanie Woodmansee for Henry & Co. Design. “Since home entertaining is becoming a big focus, dedicating a space for fun activities is a wonderful idea. In one of our New Jersey projects, we designed a game table with pull-out cup holders—I’m now completely hooked on mahjong thanks to this!”
2. Cozy Rooms
Judith Marilyn for Oho InteriorsWhile expansive, open spaces can be striking, they often struggle to achieve that warm, intimate, and cozy feel that’s essential in any living room. In 2025, designers expect a shift towards cozier environments, with seating arrangements designed to enhance comfort and encourage closeness.
“Modern homes with 12-foot ceilings and vast open areas will always have their place, but with rising construction costs, many of our clients are opting for more modestly scaled spaces. This includes reducing ceiling heights and room dimensions in favor of architectural features that make a strong impact,” says designer Melissa Oholendt of Oho Interiors.
“This approach allows us as designers to allocate design budgets in ways that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, such as custom cabinetry with unique detailing or stylish furniture that doesn’t need to be oversized to fill a large space,” she adds.
3. "Destination" Furniture
Scott Amundson for Heather Peterson DesignWhen designing a living room, a sofa and a pair of lounge chairs are obvious essentials—but what about other pieces like a daybed or a desk? According to designer Heather Peterson from Heather Peterson Design, these unconventional additions are making their mark as well.
"We’re big fans of the concept of 'destination furniture' in living rooms, and I think we’ll see it more this year," she shares. "Elements like a daybed right in the middle of the room or a desk tucked behind the couch promote hands-on activities and allow people to be in the same space while engaging in different tasks."
4. Lighting Across Time Periods
Stacy Zarin Goldberg for Storie CollectiveLighting fixtures are like the accessories of a room. In 2025, the trend is all about combining vintage and modern lighting styles. "The key design trend for the upcoming year involves seamlessly mixing the old with the new, creating a unique fusion of textures, hues, and illumination," shares designer Sara Swabb of Storie Collective.
"Pairing a classic Murano glass lamp or a plug-in sconce with a sleek, minimalist pendant creates an aura of timeless elegance," she continues. "The secret to achieving the perfect balance between vintage and modern is using complementary finishes, shapes, and tones. When done right, they enhance each other without overshadowing, forming harmonious, bespoke lighting setups that seem effortlessly curated."
5. Family-Friendly Furniture
John Cole for Anthony Wilder Design BuildLiving rooms are the soul of the home, and with all the activity, spills, and accidents are bound to happen. The answer? Furniture that lets you relax without worrying.
"Our team is noticing an increasing number of clients seeking minimalist palettes paired with durable, family-oriented furniture that can withstand everyday use," shares designer Sydney Levy of Anthony Wilder Design/Build. "Our younger clients, who tend to skip coasters, often request coffee tables that don’t reveal watermarks or vintage pieces that can handle the marks left by their busy households."
6. Living Rooms That Make a Statement
David Cannon Photography for State and Season Home Design and SupplyIf your living room isn't already the crown jewel of your home, 2025 may be the year it finally shines—especially with the guidance of your designer. “More than ever, people are investing more into their living rooms,” says designer Lucy Small of State and Season Home Design and Supply.
“While kitchens and bathrooms are known for being expensive spaces, living rooms were once just an area where kids could spill snacks or dogs could stretch out on the couch," she explains. "The kids and pets are still there, but now, even clients with young families and animals are wanting a more thoughtful, decorative space that reflects their unique style.”
7. Fabrics Inspired by the Past
Marta Xochilt Perez for Christine Markatos DesignA great designer knows that a timeless and thoughtful home comes from blending the old and the new, a principle that applies to every detail, big or small. "In 2025, we're focusing on combining upholstery styles with vintage-inspired fabrics to achieve a look that's both fresh and enduring," explains designer Christine Markatos.
"I prefer to keep the upholstery shapes simple while adding a unique vintage finish that boasts character and patina," she says. "The result is a cozy, found look with a distinctive perspective."
8. Color From Wall to Wall
Stacy Zarin Goldberg for Storie CollectiveIntroducing bold colors into a central room might feel intimidating, but in 2025, daring color choices are making a grand return, especially with rich, deep pigments. “Saturated hues can be both grounding and expressive,” shares Swabb.
"One of the most exciting trends for the upcoming year is the idea of enveloping a space in a single color or variations of the same color," she explains. "Choosing just one color can set distinct moods depending on the shade selected. This approach places color front and center, creating an atmosphere that feels purposeful, luxurious, and inviting.”
