However, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of slipping into a bed that’s perfectly made each night, or even just being around one that's beautifully arranged (especially when your bedroom also serves as your home office)! It brings an instant sense of luxury to any room without costing a thing.
Yet, many of us settle for a less-than-perfect bed because changing the bedding seems too difficult (even though it should be done weekly), or we’re so rushed in the morning that we feel there’s no time to do it. The good news is, there are ways to simplify this task and take the hassle out of it. Here are eight clever hacks to make making your bed effortless.
Choose Classic White Bedding
No matter what style your bedroom is, you can't go wrong with timeless white bedding. Available from virtually every brand, in all materials and at any price range, white bedding is a versatile choice. Plus, if you spill something or end up with a stain (it happens to the best of us), just throw it in the wash with some bleach, and it’ll look like new again.
Keep Two Matching Sets of Sheets
You likely have multiple sets of sheets already, but having two identical ones is a game-changer—especially if you have kids, pets, or enjoy eating or drinking in bed. That way, if something spills on your pillowcase or your dog leaves drool on the top sheet, you don’t have to change all the linens (saving you time and effort).
Put On Your Duvet the Quick Way
If you find yourself stressed every time it’s time to put on your duvet cover, rest assured, you're not the only one. However, there’s a quicker and easier way to get it done, according to Jessica Hanley, founder and CEO of Piglet in Bed.
“Start by laying the duvet insert flat on the bed. Next, turn the duvet cover inside out, so the top two inside corners are exposed and positioned at the duvet insert's top. Attach these corners to the duvet insert using the strings inside the duvet cover—this will keep the duvet insert from shifting as you move in bed,” she explains.
Then, pull both sides of the duvet cover over the insert. Give it a shake while holding the top two corners. “Once the duvet insert is settled into place, attach the bottom two corners with the inner strings, then finish by fastening the buttons,” she adds.
If you’re tired of dealing with buttons, you might want to consider having a zipper sewn in by a local tailor.
Or Simply Skip the Duvet Entirely
If you’re going through a particularly hectic phase in life, it might be smarter to use a comforter instead of a duvet. Choosing a machine-washable decorative comforter can save you time, energy, and hassle. While it might not feel as luxurious as a hotel bed, remember that your home isn’t meant to be one.
Prefer a Relaxed Look? Choose Linen
Linen bedding has been a popular choice in recent years for good reason. Hanley notes that it has that ‘lived-in’ look, so you won’t have to make your bed perfectly every day.
“You don’t have to stress about making it look pristine or like something from a hotel. Go for a more casual, laid-back look. Linen is ideal for this since it naturally wrinkles, meaning no ironing required,” she explains.
Layer It Up
A simple way to enhance your bed with minimal effort is by adding layers. “Layering adds a cozy touch, and incorporating a wool blanket can introduce patterns like plaid or gingham, boosting the overall style of your bed,” says Hanley.
Even better, Katie Cardullo from bedding company Cozy Earth explains that layers can make your bed appear more luxurious.
Don’t Forget About Pillows
Pillows are an excellent way to bring style, color, and texture to your bed, even if your bedding is minimalist. Cardullo adds, “Don’t overlook accent pillows—they’re a fantastic addition to your bed without extra effort!”
A Minimalist Bed Is Easy to Make
Keep in mind, most of us can make our bed in two minutes or less, even without all the bells and whistles. Consider it a small time investment for a big payoff.
Begin by removing the blankets and pillows, and evicting any pets (sorry, kitty). Smooth the top sheet to avoid any bunching. Next, place the comforter and align it with the headboard or top of the bed. Make sure the sides are even. Add your pillows and finish by draping a charming blanket over the foot of the bed. Remember, a bed that’s not perfectly made is still far better than one that’s left unmade!
