Let's face it: When was the last time you updated your bra collection? If it’s been more than six months, your bra might be nearing the end of its life. Experts typically advise replacing bras every six months—or after approximately 180 wears.
"If you rotate a large number of bras, you might extend the life of each one beyond six months, provided you're taking proper care of them," says Ali Cudby, author of Busted and Fit My Bras, and the founder of Fab Foundations. "Drying bras in the dryer accelerates the breakdown of their elastic, so help your bras last longer by air-drying them and hand-washing whenever possible."

1. The band is loose.
Over time, the back of a bra naturally stretches. "When this happens, the hook system lets you adjust to a tighter setting to restore the snug feel of a properly fitted band," says Josie-Anne Le Diouron, a bra expert at Empreinte. "However, when the band becomes so stretched that even the tightest hook feels too loose, it's a clear sign it's time for a new bra."
2. The cups are loose or too large.
Le Diouron explains that if you notice a noticeable gap between your breasts and the cups, it means the cups have lost their shape or your breast volume has decreased, often due to weight loss. "This results in poor support, and the bra’s shape may show through your clothes, leaving you with uneven contours instead of smooth curves," she says.

3. The cups are too small.
"If your breast tissue is spilling over the top of the cups, it means one of two things: either the cups are too small or the straps are too tight," explains Katie Donnelly, author of Blog, Bra Fitting. "It's possible your bra size has changed since your last purchase, and you might need a larger cup size."
"If you notice slight spillage but the cup size seems correct, try loosening the straps slightly," she recommends. "You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between your skin and the strap for the ideal fit."
4. The straps are loose.
Few things are more frustrating than constantly having to adjust a bra strap that keeps slipping down your shoulder. If this is happening, it’s a sure sign it’s time to replace your bra. "The strap connects the cup to the back of the bra, supporting the weight of the breast while keeping the cups fitting snugly," says Le Diouron.
5. The underwire is causing discomfort.
Who enjoys the pain of an underwire poking out and digging into sensitive skin? Not many, I’d wager. "Even if you attempt to fix it by pushing the wire back in and sewing the fabric shut, it's just a short-term solution, and it’s likely to pop out again," says Laetitia Lecigne, creative director at Jockey. "It's time to ditch it!" Consider switching to wireless bras.
6. The fabric is wearing out.
"Fabric has a limited lifespan, depending on how often it's worn and washed," says Lecigne. "If you notice the fabric is deteriorating—like spandex peeling off or the material losing its stretch—your bra is no longer performing its job and should be replaced."
7. Your bra has visible hair.
"If you've noticed little strands of elastic poking out of your bra, it's already too late—that bra is beyond saving," says Cudby. Those little hairs are a sign that the elastic has broken down. "Since 80 percent of your bra's support comes from the band, which must fit securely around your body, a bra without elastic won't provide the necessary support," she explains. "A small piece of fabric alone can't do the job! Without the elastic, the bra won’t have the structure it needs to lift your breasts."
8. The color has faded or looks dirty.
If your light-colored bra is starting to look dingy or dirty, or your dark-colored bra is losing its vibrancy, it’s time for a new one.
9. Your style preferences have changed.
Over time, a bra can lose its appeal or your personal style may evolve. "Even though bras are typically worn under clothes, it's essential to choose one that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and empowered," says Jaclinne Cheng, founder and CEO of Spicy Lingerie.
