'Embrace liberation!' This is the guiding principle of the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Kissimmee, Florida. Since its founding in 1931, the AANR has assisted countless nudists in discovering welcoming communities and secure environments for wholesome, clothing-optional activities.
For those intrigued by nudist events, questions often arise about how social dynamics shift when clothing is optional or absent. To explore this, we consulted Carolyn Hawkins, the AANR's public relations coordinator and a regular at Kissimmee’s Cypress Cove Nudist Resort. Here are some key tips to consider if you ever embark on a 'nakation.'
1. Some nudist resorts may allow you to remain clothed if you prefer.
Some organizations aim to gently introduce newcomers to the world of nudity by hosting events labeled as 'clothing-optional.' This allows attendees to remain dressed—whether in a long T-shirt or other attire—until they feel ready to disrobe. However, 'clothing-free' events require participants to fully embrace nudity without hesitation. If you're in a clothing-optional setting, be aware that certain areas, like pools or hot tubs, may still require nudity. As Hawkins explained to Mytour in 2016, 'In all of our clubs, you must be nude to enter a pool or hot tub, even if the event is clothing-optional.'
2. Nudist resorts may restrict the use of cameras.

Hawkins noted that anyone seen carrying a phone in such settings is likely to be approached: 'At Cypress Cove, we enforce a red dot policy. If someone brings a phone, we ask them to cover the camera lens with a red dot. So far, no one has objected to this rule.'
3. A towel is an essential item to carry everywhere at a nudist resort.
Although no one is questioning personal cleanliness, most nudist events require attendees to bring a bath or beach towel and use it as a protective layer when sitting. 'It’s a matter of hygiene,' Hawkins explained.
4. Footwear is perfectly acceptable.
Given Florida’s fire ant population, Hawkins mentioned that it’s common to see nudists wearing shoes or sandals despite being otherwise unclothed: 'The beach also has small sticks and similar hazards.' Hats and jewelry are also frequently worn.
5. Dining in the nude is a standard practice at nudist resorts.

Some guests might feel chilly in dining areas and opt for light clothing to stay warm. While many servers are nudists, they stay clothed during their shifts.
6. Toenail grooming isn’t closely monitored at nudist resorts. (But it’s still a good idea to trim them.)
While maintaining trimmed nails is generally advisable, Hawkins mentioned that most groups won’t fuss over minor lapses in personal grooming. 'It’s up to the individual,' she said. 'The focus is on body acceptance.'
7. Public displays of affection are strictly prohibited.

Hawkins explained that most clubs maintain a level of modesty reminiscent of the minister in 1984’s Footloose when it comes to physical contact. 'The most affection you’ll see is holding hands or a brief hug when greeting friends,' she noted.
8. Solo individuals may face restrictions at nudist resorts.
'Clubs strive to maintain a gender balance as much as possible,' Hawkins stated. While couples usually face no issues gaining entry, single individuals might. 'If a single man or woman arrives at the entrance, they’re questioned about their nudist background,' Hawkins clarified. Without prior experience or a scheduled singles event, they may need to rethink their nakation plans.
9. Nudity is allowed, but appearing provocative is not.
For clothing-optional events, Hawkins mentioned that there’s an unofficial dress code: revealing lingerie, dresses, or tight jeans are discouraged. 'That’s about sexual appeal, not the natural nude form,' she explained.
This doesn’t rule out romance: Hawkins has organized multiple nude weddings for couples who met at Cypress Cove during singles events. And yes, brides saved significantly by skipping traditional wedding dresses. 'They can allocate those funds toward the honeymoon,' Hawkins added.
