As the seasons change from warm to chilly, it’s time to update your wardrobe—say goodbye to tank tops and hello to cozy cable-knit sweaters. It’s also the perfect time to switch up your makeup. This fall, we’re seeing a wide range of beauty trends, from Scandi-inspired frosty pink cheeks to bold, dark tones. We asked makeup artists to share the trends they’re most excited about this season for some fresh ideas.
1. Autumn Berry Blush
Blush is one of those makeup essentials that provides a lot of impact, even with just a light application. For this season, makeup artist and TikTok beauty creator Victoria Lyn suggests embracing berry tones for a fresh twist. You can wear it solo or blend it with nude, orange, and berry shades for an ombré effect.
'Start with the darkest shade at the top of your cheekbone, then layer the lighter shades downward onto the apples of your cheeks,' advises Lyn. 'If you don’t have multiple blush shades, feel free to use your favorite lipsticks as a substitute. The sunset blush wave inspired this trend, following the same technique but with autumn-inspired tones.'
2. Scandi Makeup
The Scandi makeup trend is making waves just as the cooler months approach. This bright, fresh take on the no-makeup makeup look is all about achieving a hydrated, dewy finish as if kissed by crisp fall air. 'The goal is to look effortlessly natural with minimal makeup,' says Aimee Carr, makeup artist and founder of Voodoo Makeup. Key elements include healthy, hydrated skin, a hint of bronzer, icy white highlighter, and pink lips and cheeks.
3. Full Ombré Lips
Ombré lips are a trendy makeup style that seamlessly blends two lip colors, paired with a brown pencil outline. It’s a nostalgic ‘90s vibe that’s making a big comeback for fall 2024. 'This brown-to-red lip look is ideal for anyone seeking a natural, fuller lip appearance,' says Michele Probst, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Worth Beauty Company.
4. PSL Invasion
Don't hold back your love for pumpkin spice this season. The 'PSL makeup' trend is all about infusing autumnal shades into your look. 'You can tell fall is here when warm tones dominate again,' says Lyn. 'I adore this trend because it embodies a classic autumn palette that's cozy and inviting. Whether it's a pumpkin spice smoky eye or a burnt orange lip, it's a fall classic.'
5. Jewel Tone Lashes
While cinnamon and orange remain fall favorites, jewel tones are making their mark this season. We’re seeing vibrant, gemstone-inspired shades appear on eyelids and lashes. 'There’s a major makeup moment happening with colorful lashes that flow into the liner,' says Samreen Arshad, professional makeup artist. 'The popularity of colored lashes is also being driven by fashion runways and celebrity culture, where models are rocking bold lash colors.'
6. Grunge Espresso
Brown shades are making a strong appearance this fall, particularly with the grunge-inspired espresso makeup trend. 'It's your go-to brown eyeshadow, but turned up a notch,' says Lyn. 'Don’t shy away from adding more eyeliner and smudging it into your lower lash line. This trend draws influence from high fashion runways and, most notably, the brat beauty movement. Charli XCX frequently rocks an espresso eye, and she inspires me to wear this look more!'
7. Lived-In, Smoky Eyes
Alongside the grunge espresso trend, we're embracing the charm of 'messy' beauty looks. A lived-in smoky eye is the perfect way to achieve that vibe. 'This trend highlights purposeful eye makeup with smoky winged liner and tightlining, creating a bold yet effortlessly chic effect,' says Arshad. 'Right now, the trend is all about being expressive and bold. The smoky eye has long been a favorite for making a statement.'
8. Dark Lipstick
What better season to embrace moody lipstick shades than autumn? From plush orchid tones to deep reds, go ahead and indulge in bold saturation this fall. 'I love adding vibrant color to the face, and a striking dark lipstick is a perfect way to do that while staying on-trend for the season,' says Carr. 'We’re seeing a lot of rich reds and browns—it's a fun way to experiment with color while staying in sync with the season.'
9. Illuminating Primers
Radiant, healthy skin is always a win, but it can be harder to achieve when the weather turns colder. Illuminating primers are a great solution for instantly brightening a dull complexion. 'Illuminating primers blur imperfections and enhance foundation's radiance,' says Probst. 'They help create a smooth skin texture and ensure long-lasting makeup. I love using a primer when I'm going out or for clients who want their skin to look dewy and fresh.'
