Regardless of the price, every premium bottle of tequila starts the same: with the agave plant. These top-tier spirits are aged in everything from Cabernet to Cognac and even well-seasoned sherry casks. The bottles themselves are works of art, often crafted from hand-painted ceramics or elegant crystal decanters.
Let’s explore some of the most expensive tequila bottles ever sold, including the one that holds the title of the most expensive tequila in the world.
1. Tequila Ley .925 Diamante
Tequila Ley holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensive bottle ever sold — of anything. The company's bottle made of "pure white gold" and "pure platinum", decorated with 4,000 diamonds, and known by names such as Tequila Ley Ultra Premium and Diamante, was sold in 2006 for $225,000. (Fun fact: That sale barely surpasses the price of the most expensive Funko Pop ever sold.)
However, you’re not just purchasing the extravagant bottle — according to Ley .925, the tequila inside this ultra-premium vessel is crafted from 100 percent blue agave, sourced from the Hacienda La Capilla distillery, and aged for up to seven years in French oak barrels.
2. Clase Azul 15th Anniversary Edition
In 2017, Clase Azul marked its 15th anniversary by releasing 15 exclusive amber and gold bottles of tequila, each priced at $30,000. "We never imagined we'd be in the business of selling such high-priced bottles on a regular basis," founder Arturo Lomeli shared with CNN at the time.
Currently, you can purchase a standard bottle of Clase Azul reposado tequila for around $175, but the company also produces limited-edition bottles, such as their Master Artisan series, which is priced at approximately $25,000.
3. Patrón en Lalique
Do you prefer your tequila served in a finely crafted crystal decanter? Patrón's "en Lalique" series, which began in 2015, introduced Patrón en Lalique Serie 2 in 2017.
Released in 2023, Patrón en Lalique Serie 3 features a crystal decanter designed by Marc Larminaux, the artistic and creative director of Lalique, a French company renowned for its jewelry and glassware since 1885. The suggested retail price is $7,500.
According to Patrón, the bottle contains "a one-of-a-kind, non-replicable blend of 14 extra añejo tequilas aged to perfection."
4. Jose Cuervo 250 Anevarsario (Rolling Stones Edition)
This isn't your average Jose Cuervo from the corner bar. The Jose Cuervo 250 Anevarsario is a premium extra añejo tequila, aged for a minimum of three years in French and American oak barrels, then blended with even older reserve tequilas and aged an additional year in Spanish sherry barrels.
"Aging tequila in barrels causes the agave character to fade, while the barrel flavors like caramel and nuts take over," said Food & Wine editor Ray Isle in 2016 during an interview with Money.
A standard bottle of Anevarsario typically costs over $3,000, but the most expensive variant, the Rolling Stones edition, was originally priced at $4,000 and now fetches approximately $80,000.
5. Código 1530 14-year Extra Añejo Double Barrel-Aged
What makes Código 1530's $3,900 extra añejo tequila "double barrel-aged"? After 14 years of aging in Cabernet barrels, it is then finished in Cognac barrels to add a unique touch.
"We chose to explore our collection of extra añejo tequila barrels, giving them an additional six months of aging in toasted French Cognac casks, extending the process beyond the initial 14 years," explained Federico "Fede" Vaughan, cofounder and co-CEO of Código 1530, in a press release.
In 2022, Código 1530 produced just 400 bottles of this highly exclusive and expensive tequila.
