Unlike conventional libraries that take readers on journeys to distant places, a land library focuses exclusively on literature about the immediate surroundings outside its walls.
As highlighted by CityLab, the Rocky Mountain Land Library in Colorado embodies this concept. This unique space welcomes artists, writers, researchers, and enthusiasts to engage in immersive retreats. The facility features accommodations, dining areas, and a collection of approximately 35,000 books dedicated to the culture, landscapes, and wildlife of the American West. Guests can deepen their understanding by stepping outside to explore the vast former cattle ranch where the library is situated.
Michael Ciaglo, KickstarterJeff Lee and Ann Martin, the library's creators, were inspired by a library-hostel combination they encountered in Wales. As longtime staff members at Denver's Tattered Cover Book Store, they were passionate about establishing a library that would bridge the gap between travelers and their surroundings.
After securing an ideal ranch for their vision and funding renovations through Kickstarter, Lee and Martin are now preparing the site for guests. The initial structure, featuring bedrooms, a kitchen, a classroom, and the beginnings of the library, is scheduled for completion by summer 2018. In the meantime, the duo is hosting summer workshops on the property, offering inspiration to visitors exploring Colorado.
