What Are Sticky Bras?
Sticky bras are lightweight, adhesive-backed coverings designed as an alternative to traditional bras. They’re especially useful for outfits that don’t pair well with regular bras—such as backless dresses or tops with plunging necklines—while still providing lift, support, and nipple concealment.
“With the help of technological innovations, manufacturers have been able to create options that are not only more flexible and comfortable but also less bulky and gentler on the skin,” says Jessica Pfister, an undergarment specialist and president of Komar Intimates.
These bras come in various shapes and sizes to meet different needs. For instance, there are sticky bra cups that lift each breast and even create cleavage, simple nipple covers (ideal for A to C cup sizes) that offer modesty, and silicone versions that have a more conical shape with added padding. (Adhesive boob tape is also a similar option that lifts and holds the breasts in place for special occasions.)
“Unless you have extremely sensitive skin, these products are generally safe for most users,” Pfister explains. “If you have a latex allergy, be sure to check the label to confirm that the product is latex-free.”
When to Wear Sticky Bras
Sticky bras are a great choice when you can't wear a traditional bra due to your outfit's design, but still want the support of one.
“The type of sticky bra you choose should depend not only on your preferences but also on your outfit,” explains Margaret Gormon, a bra expert and the founder of januarydecember. “Sticky bras are most commonly used to solve the issue of backless tops or dresses, deep V-neck tops, or any other outfits where a regular bra would be visible.”
Another situation where sticky bras come in handy is when you want support but don't feel like wearing a full bra, or when you want to avoid exposing your nipples. In these cases, a simple adhesive nipple cover can provide coverage, or you can opt for breast tape to maintain some lift.
How to Wear Sticky Bras
Follow this easy step-by-step guide on how to wear sticky bras:
- Start by cleaning and drying your chest. This will remove any dirt, oil, or lotion, ensuring the adhesive sticks better.
- Remove the protective film from the sticky side.
- Place the bra (or each cup) on your breast with the sticky side against your skin, and press gently to adhere.
- Depending on the style of the sticky bra, fasten the clasps or drawstrings for the desired lift and cleavage.
- Make any necessary adjustments for comfort and support.
Sticky bras aren’t designed for long-term wear, as they can become uncomfortable over time, according to Pfister. In other words, they are best used for short events rather than all-day wear. Once you're finished, gently peel it off and clean/store it according to the instructions on the bra’s label.
Can People With Big Boobs Wear Sticky Bras?
A common misconception about sticky bras is that they aren't suitable for people with larger chests. Gormon debunks this myth, saying it’s all about applying the bra properly and choosing the right size. “Proper application and sizing are key,” she explains.
Simply follow the instructions above (making sure your skin is clean and dry) to ensure the best adhesive results, and be sure to choose a sticky bra in the right size for your breasts.
Pfister also recommends checking reviews before making a purchase. And if a sticky bra isn't your preferred choice but you still want to wear your outfit, she suggests considering a low-back bustier or a supportive strapless bra as an alternative.
