While George Lucas is the mastermind behind both franchises, Star Wars and Indiana Jones seem like two completely different worlds. The Indiana Jones films follow the adventures of a 1930s archaeologist, while Star Wars unfolds as a mystical space opera set 'a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.' However, a Reddit post by MTK67 suggests that both series actually exist within the same universe.
As reported by CBR.com, a new fan theory bridges the gap between the Star Wars and Indiana Jones universes across time and space. This theory proposes that after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983), the Jedi discovered a way to imprison the spirits of the final Sith Lords. To keep these powerful Force Ghosts from posing a danger, the Jedi enlisted two reliable droids to carry a mysterious container to a far-off planet.
R2-D2 and C-3PO eventually bring the container to Earth, where they encounter early humans. Lacking any understanding of robots, the Earthlings perceive the droids as celestial messengers. The box, along with the immense power it holds, transforms into the Ark of the Covenant, which Indiana Jones would later search for centuries afterward.
While this theory might sound unbelievable, it finds support in a subtle reference to Star Wars in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Near the Ark of the Covenant’s ancient resting spot, an engraving of R2-D2 and C-3PO is visible. Though this Easter egg is probably a playful nod to George Lucas's involvement in both films, it lends credence to the idea that the two droids encountered an ancient civilization on Earth long before.
Given that Star Wars is one of the most iconic film franchises in history, it’s no surprise that it has sparked countless fan theories. From the notion that Palpatine is Anakin’s true father to the idea that Ewoks were once cannibalistic, here are more fan theories surrounding this beloved sci-fi series.
