Youth culture often feels bleak, chaotic, and disheartening, whether it’s about promising movements collapsing inexplicably, game show victors facing harassment, or grim TV dramas centered on adolescence.
Should you tune into ‘Euphoria’ or ‘Yellowjackets?’
Hollywood portrays teenage stories in two distinct ways. Some shows, like Freaks and Geeks, reflect on the quirks of youth with a nostalgic, humorous tone, while others, such as Dawson’s Creek, treat the intense emotions of adolescence with gravity. Yellowjackets is akin to Freaks and Geeks, but with a darker twist—cannibalism. Euphoria, on the other hand, mirrors Dawson’s Creek, but with added layers of explicit content and substance abuse. Both series are masterfully crafted, engaging, and visually stunning. If you’re someone who scoffs at teenage struggles, preferring the challenges of adulthood, Yellowjackets is for you. If you’re curious about the raw, pre-apocalyptic essence of modern teenage life and can handle narratives that depict today’s youth as pioneers of rebellion and despair, Euphoria will resonate with you.
Reddit’s antiwork community faces a dramatic collapse
Last November, I discussed the growing “antiwork” community on Reddit, driven by optimistic young individuals advocating for improved wages and working conditions. The subreddit amassed over 1.7 million members, but this week, it fell apart spectacularly. A moderator chose to appear on Fox News for an interview with Jesse Watters, and describing it as a disaster would be an understatement. To avoid adding to the moderator’s evident distress, I’ll simply share the video and let you form your own opinion. The community’s reaction was intense, with many users banned for voicing criticism. The subreddit was temporarily made private, reopened with a questionable “new” moderator who was later removed, and users fled in large numbers. What remains are countless posts about the fallout and repeated moderator efforts to apologize and “rebuild.” It’s a disheartening situation. My condolences to the workers.
Online trolls attack teenage ‘Jeopardy’ champions
At times, the internet magnifies the worst behaviors of teenagers. A prime example: Jeopardy Teen Tournament participant Claire Sattler (@clairesat) recently shared a TikTok video detailing how her game show win led to relentless online harassment, stalking, and absurd accusations, including claims she received answers from Alex Trebek. Other young Jeopardy contestants echoed similar experiences. “I was on Kids’ Jeopardy! and they sexualized and analyzed me at just 11 years old,” contestant Aria Gerson (@not_like_stark) revealed. Delightful TikTok snippets to brighten your day
The online world for kids isn’t solely about cyberbullying and public breakdowns. On the brighter side, TikTok excels at connecting people with niche interests, allowing them to find others who share their passions. Here are three communities that might just become your new obsession (if you’re into that sort of thing).
Cleantok: If you enjoy watching things being cleaned, organized, or restored, #cleantok is for you. Discover videos of unusual cleaning tasks like bees being extracted from washing machines, satisfying clips of dirty screens being polished, and touching moments of headstones being cleaned. It’s oddly soothing.
Eggpeelchallenge: Personally, I wouldn’t spend time peeling a raw egg without breaking it, but I respect those who do. Watch these eggpeel challenge videos and try it yourself—it’s tougher than it looks.
Plogging: Plogging merges exercise with community service in a fun way. The concept involves jogging while picking up litter, making your workout both productive and varied.
Moon Phases: The Moon is having a moment on TikTok, with users exploring the phase it was in during their birth and attributing personality traits to it. Kids, right?
Viral video of the week: DABABY X NBA YOUNGBOY - HIT [Official Video]
I’m a big fan of DaBaby, and it seems YouTube agrees. His latest video for “Hit,” featuring NBA Youngboy, has racked up over two million views in just a few days, despite being filmed under challenging circumstances: Youngboy is on house arrest, yet he still managed to contribute to this engaging project. I appreciate how the Nerf guns (assuming they’re Nerf guns) playfully mock gangster rap tropes and reference DaBaby’s recent legal issues, all while everyone appears to be having a blast. Don’t just take my word for it—check out some fan reactions to see what dedicated followers are saying.
