During the late 2000s, Rare, a prominent video game developer, worked on revamping the iconic Nintendo 64 first-person shooter, GoldenEye 007, for the Xbox 360. This reimagined version retained the original single-player campaign and beloved multiplayer modes, while introducing enhanced graphics, contemporary controls, and online functionality. Players could even switch between the updated visuals and the nostalgic N64 graphics. Despite nearing completion, the project was abandoned in 2008 due to complex licensing disputes.
Although the scrapped GoldenEye remake was widely known within the gaming community, concrete evidence emerged last month when gameplay footage was leaked online. Recently, a playable build of the game was also made available.
The leaked version is fully functional on PC through Xbox 360 emulation tools. While online multiplayer is unavailable, the game supports local multiplayer modes for fans to enjoy.
For those curious: Yes, it’s theoretically possible to play the 2008 GoldenEye remake on your PC. However, downloading or sharing the ROM file is technically illegal, so we won’t provide instructions on how to locate it. Emulation exists in a legal gray area, and the GoldenEye Xbox 360 ROM is particularly complicated—it’s technically unreleased property owned by Rare and includes copyrighted materials from multiple companies, as well as the likenesses of several actors.
That said, it’s completely legal to install the software required to hypothetically play the leaked ROM on a PC. In this theoretical situation, you’d need to download the Xenia Xbox 360 emulator. Follow the setup and installation instructions in the video below:
Keep in mind that Xenia is designed as a research tool and not for playing illegally acquired software. However, you can use it to play Xbox 360 games you own and have copied to your PC. The emulator supports both controllers and keyboard/mouse setups. An Xbox controller is recommended for automatic recognition, but a PlayStation 4 controller can also be used with the help of DS4Windows.
