The upcoming SpaceX Starlink satellite mission is set to occur soon. Originally planned for February 28, the launch was unexpectedly aborted automatically, even though the rocket was ready. Following another postponement on March 1 due to unfavorable weather, SpaceX has rescheduled the attempt for tomorrow.
The new launch date is Thursday, March 4, with the exact time to be confirmed. You can watch the entire event live from your home.
Timing and Viewing Locations
The launch is scheduled from Florida's Kennedy Space Center, and you can witness it through three free online options. Tune in live on Space.com, SpaceX’s YouTube channel, or directly via SpaceX’s website. The exact launch time is still pending, so stay updated by checking Space X’s site or space.com. The broadcast will start 15 minutes before liftoff, so ensure you’re logged in early to catch the countdown.
This marks SpaceX’s sixth launch in 2021, part of its ambitious plan to conduct at least 40 launches this year, doubling its 2020 figures. The goal is for the booster and rocket to complete ten missions before needing significant maintenance.
What is the purpose of the SpaceX launch?
The mission aims to deploy 60 satellites into orbit using the Falcon 9 rocket equipped with a B1049 booster. These will join the 1,000 already orbiting Earth (excluding 200 prototypes from test launches). SpaceX intends to launch 1,440 satellites into low Earth orbit to finalize the Starlink network, designed to deliver reliable commercial internet to underserved areas. (Just as 5G gains traction, a new network emerges).
“With the rise in remote work and virtual learning, reliable internet access has become crucial,” SpaceX stated. “Starlink enables rapid deployment to regions in need.” The service is expected to launch later this year.
