But don't worry, we’ve got an easy solution for you: the three-ingredient Kentucky mule, which is perfect for Derby viewing or any occasion. This drink is a twist on the classic Moscow mule and bears a resemblance to the beloved mint julep. It’s made with bourbon, lime juice, and ginger beer, along with some fresh garnishes. Simple to make, it’s the ideal refreshing sip for the warmer months.
“The Kentucky mule is a variation of the Moscow mule, which was invented in the 1940s and typically made with vodka. Both cocktails belong to a larger category called a buck [created in the late 1800s],” says Kim Romo, Beverage Manager at Eberly in Austin, Texas. “Buck cocktails feature ginger and citrus, and by switching the vodka for bourbon, you add a richer, more complex flavor while maintaining the mule's refreshing and bubbly qualities.”
“Opt for a higher-proof bourbon that can hold its own against the ginger,” advises Romo. “I recommend using a bourbon that’s at least 90-proof.”
Despite being a breeze to prepare, there are a few tips for elevating your Kentucky mule. “Always use fresh ingredients, especially mint,” says Jennifer Jackson, Beverage Manager for Thompson Restaurants. “If your mint isn’t looking its best, fill a rocks glass with ice and water. Trim the mint ends and place the leaves in the ice bath for about 30 minutes to an hour.” She also suggests being gentle when muddling the lime and mint. “You don’t need to over-muddle. A few presses are enough to release the flavors,” she explains.
Want to customize your Kentucky mule? Feel free to get creative with ingredients. “Try adding fresh berries or fruits. Blackberries or peaches are my favorites,” says Romo. “They pair perfectly with both bourbon and ginger.” Jackson, on the other hand, likes to experiment with honey or ginger in her mule recipe. “If you prefer a sweeter drink, try a touch of honey. If you want more spice, add freshly grated ginger,” she advises.
“Before you garnish with a mint sprig, give it a little smack between your hands to release its aromatic oils,” recommends Jackson. “This will fill your drink with a delightful mint fragrance with every sip, enhancing the experience.”
