While not every child dreams of being a meteorologist on TV, a new competition offers a rare opportunity for young weather enthusiasts. The Mini Meteorologist Contest, presented by Lands’ End, will choose four kids to deliver a live weather report on The Weather Channel this summer.
The nationwide competition is open to budding meteorologists across the U.S. and Canada, ages 6 to 16. To participate, they must submit an essay between 50 and 500 words describing their love for science and weather, as well as why they would want to be a meteorologist for a day. Four winners will earn a trip for themselves and their parents to The Weather Channel's headquarters in Atlanta, where they'll present a live weather forecast on July 12, which also happens to be National Summer Learning Day.
Entries will be evaluated based on creativity, grammar, and passion for meteorology. The rules are simple: no mention of brands or products except for Lands’ End or The Weather Channel (no essays about how much you admire L.L. Bean's clouds, kids), and the work must be entirely the child's own. Semi-finalists will be judged on their on-air presentation skills during a Skype interview.
If they win, they'll receive an all-inclusive trip to Atlanta, complete with media training, a tour of The Weather Channel's headquarters, and a $500 Lands' End gift card to help them pick out the perfect weather-reporting outfit.
The submission deadline is May 21. Essays can be submitted here.
