In addition to being a passionate art collector, David Bowie was also a talented artist himself. His creations include nearly fifty portraits of musicians, friends, and even Bowie himself, which he painted in the mid-1990s under the title Dead Heads (or DHeads). One of these paintings, DHead XLVI, was recently discovered in a donation center in South River, Ontario, where it was purchased for just CAD $5 (USD $4.05).
As reported by NPR, the buyer initially did not realize that the acrylic painting featured Bowie’s signature on the back until after the purchase. They later reached out to Toronto’s Cowley Abbott auction house, which worked alongside Bowie autograph expert Andy Peters to authenticate the piece. Interestingly, Peters had previously come across an online listing for the same artwork in the early 2000s and immediately recognized it.
“I didn’t need to see the autograph on the back because I already knew, but the signature certainly confirmed it,” he told CNN.
