No awkward waistband pinching, your curves are accentuated in all the right places, and the hem lands exactly where it should. Once you learn how to measure your pant size, you’ll enjoy this flawless fit every time you shop for a new pair. This leads to more confident shopping, fewer returns, and ultimately, more savings.
“When your jeans fit properly, you feel great wearing them, which makes it easier to style them with different looks,” says Lexy Silverstein, a fashion expert with a focus on sustainable fashion.
She explains, 'Rather than purchasing several pairs to match various outfits, a single, versatile pair can be styled in many different ways, minimizing the total number of items you need. This method is key for moving away from fast fashion and embracing a more eco-friendly, sustainable approach to the fashion industry.'

How to Determine Your Pant Size: A Step-by-Step Guide
Figuring out your pant size is straightforward. All you need are a few basic tools and about 10 minutes of your time.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Here’s what you’ll need to measure for your pants:
- Flexible measuring tape
- Paper and pen or your phone to record your measurements
Step 2: Measure Your Waist
“Take your measuring tape and wrap it around your waist where you typically wear your pants—just above your hip bones,” advises Silverstein. “Make sure the tape is snug but not tight. That number is your key!”
Make sure to write down your measurement somewhere safe. The notes app on your phone works great since it’s always with you. Alternatively, a pen and paper will do just fine.
Step 3: Measure Your Hips
Locate the fullest part of your hips and wrap the measuring tape around it. Ensure the tape is straight (not shifting up or down) and taut. It should fit snugly without pressing into you, but there should be no gaps either.
Pro Tip: “It’s recommended to take the measurement a couple of times to confirm its accuracy,” says Silverstein. Repeat it one or two more times to be sure all your numbers are spot on!
Step 4: Measure Your Inseam (Leg Length)
Now, measure from just below your crotch at the top of one leg, down to the bottom of your ankle. Silverstein notes that you may need a friend to help with this measurement. Alternatively, you can measure the inseam of a pair of pants that fit you well.

Step 5: Use These Measurements When Ordering
Keep your measurements close by, especially when shopping online. Refer to the sizing chart provided by the brand you’re purchasing from and match your measurements to their guide. Some brands even let you enter your numbers during checkout and will recommend the right size pants for you.
Pro Tip: If you're between sizes, Silverstein suggests opting for the smaller size for stretchy fabrics to help them keep their shape and fit over time. If the fabric is less flexible, consider sizing up for extra comfort and room for weight changes. And if needed, you can always have the pants tailored.
Perfecting Your Fit: Tailoring & Tricks
Sometimes, we get lucky and pants fit perfectly right off the bat. Other times, a small adjustment can elevate your pants from good to great.
“Tailoring is your secret weapon,” says Silverstein. “Opting for a larger size and getting the pants altered to your exact measurements often yields better results than simply choosing a smaller, too-tight pair. A talented tailor can work wonders, adjusting the waist, hips, or length to match your body.”
She also notes that tailoring is a game-changer when you discover an amazing pair of pants while thrifting that don’t quite fit. You can also make some quick fixes for a better fit, like using a belt, adding darts or paneling, or stretching out snug pants by wearing them damp until they dry.
