This month’s focus is on workouts that bring joy, and this week, I encouraged everyone to join me in a Richard Simmons session. If you haven’t tried it yet, simply click here and dedicate 10 minutes to it—or even just the first half.
The vibe isn’t exactly like the old VHS tapes from your grandma’s collection. The 10-minute routine is mostly warm-ups, stretches, and a few dumbbell exercises. But when a catchy tune comes on, it’s pure fun. (This video is a great pick if you’re looking for a simple dance-along.)
This got me reflecting on home workouts in general. Before YouTube, you couldn’t switch up your routine daily unless you owned a massive video collection. You’d likely stick to a few tapes or DVDs, repeating them until you memorized every move and phrase—like when Simmons asks, “Are you proud of yourself? I’m proud of you.” Skipping through a playlist of warm-ups just isn’t the same.
Still, I’m happy I gave it a try. What about you?
Alright, here’s what’s coming next. We’re rewinding to 2020 and diving into one of those Instagram Live workouts led by Ryan Heffington. This weekend’s sessions kick off at noon California time (3 p.m. for the east coast), and there are usually weekday workouts too. Don’t forget to bring a prop, as he suggests.
