Cardio interval exercises can be performed in numerous locations, as we’ve been exploring in this month’s fitness challenge. Whether it’s the convenience of your living room, the flexibility of cycling, or the simplicity of running, these options are all viable. However, heading to the gym and selecting from their range of cardio machines often proves to be the easiest and most effective choice.
Which machine should you opt for, and how should you use it? A great feature of these devices is their pre-programmed routines, allowing you to let the machine’s interface guide you through a 20-minute session. Alternatively, you can stick to your preferred interval pattern. (As previously noted, alternating one minute of intense effort with one minute of rest is straightforward and typically delivers excellent results.)
The Treadmill
Choose this if: You’re in running shoes and enjoy running or aim to improve your skills. Avoid it if you prefer a lower-impact activity or if you’re new to running and struggle to find it enjoyable.
The Elliptical
Opt for this if: You want to relax and avoid overthinking your workout. Its popularity stems from its ability to feel effortless even during intense sessions.
The Bikes
Select this if: You’re looking to challenge yourself intensely. Stationary bikes are ideal for sprint intervals, and spinning bikes allow you to adjust resistance instantly with a simple turn of the knob.
The Stair Climber
Choose this if: You’re aiming for an intense quad workout. Be cautious, as setting the resistance too high can shift the focus from cardio to strength training. To avoid burning out your legs during intervals, keep the settings moderate and avoid leaning heavily on the handrails.
The Rowing Machine
Select this if: You’re familiar with its proper use. (We can guide you on that.) The standout benefit of this machine is its ability to engage your entire body, including your arms and core, rather than just targeting your lower body.
In my view, the best approach is to use all the available options. Spending too long on one machine can become monotonous, but in a gym with multiple choices, why limit yourself? You can dedicate five minutes to intervals on the treadmill, switch to the elliptical for the next round, and then move to the bike. As long as the gym isn’t overcrowded, why not take advantage of the variety?
Share your thoughts: What’s your preferred method for gym interval training, and do you have a go-to workout routine for your favorite machine?
