Nervousness is inevitable. Whether you're presenting, going on a date, or meeting new people, it’s normal to feel anxious. To manage your anxiety, acknowledge it openly with your audience.
As former FBI agent and body language expert Joe Navarro highlights, feeling nervous is completely natural. The issue lies in our tendency to hide or deny it, rather than embracing it. By owning your anxiety and sharing it with others, you can alleviate some of the stress.
The first thing I always tell people is, if you're nervous, there’s a valid reason for it,” he says. Perhaps you're meeting someone new, going for an interview, or preparing for a nerve-wracking presentation.
Own it confidently, don’t attempt to hide it.
Navarro suggests that recognizing your nervousness — and being comfortable with it — can actually help ease some of your anxiety.
In many cases, if you're in a situation that makes you feel anxious, the others around you probably understand why. Whether you're facing a large crowd or on a first date, they might be feeling nervous too! While it's not ideal to dwell on it, a brief acknowledgment of the situation can help release some of the tension.
