The introduction of synthetic alkyd resin in solvent-based (oil-based) paints has offered several benefits. One key advantage is its unique formula that gives the paint a thick, yogurt-like consistency. A brush loaded with this paint applies more product to the surface than older versions, yet it spreads and smooths easily during application due to the friction.
Alkyd materials remain the preferred choice for gloss and semigloss (or satin) paints, especially for trim, doors, and high-traffic areas like hallways. Many homeowners still favor them for bathrooms and kitchens, where they trust the washability, even though water-based enamels in satin or gloss finishes can be safely cleaned with common household cleaners.
The opacity of alkyd paints has been enhanced by a new additive that diffuses and evaporates, leaving tiny bubbles that scatter and reflect light, giving the paint a thicker appearance. With this formulation, a single coat of white paint will fully cover even dark colors like black or vibrant yellow.
While alkyds should not be applied to unprimed drywall (as they may raise the paper coating’s nap) or unprimed masonry, they work well on raw wood and nearly all previously painted or papered surfaces. Alkyds are among the most durable interior paints, drying enough for a second coat within four to six hours. Solvents are required for thinning and cleanup, and it’s important to consult the label to determine which solvent the manufacturer recommends. Though some solvents may be nearly odorless, they remain toxic and flammable, so always ensure proper ventilation when working with them.
