Apple has officially announced the launch of three new health studies, and you’ll be able to register through an upcoming Research app.
The app is set to launch later this year, and participation is voluntary. You’ll only be involved if you sign up through the app and allow researchers access to your data. The studies include:
The Apple Hearing Study, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the University of Michigan, which will gather data on participants’ exposure to sounds—a feature integrated into iOS 13’s health app.
The Apple Women’s Health Study, working with the National Institutes of Health and Harvard’s School of Public Health, which will focus on conditions like pregnancy, infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menopause, and osteoporosis. The study is expected to use data from Apple’s menstrual cycle tracking feature.
The Apple Heart and Movement Study, in partnership with the American Heart Association and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, aims to connect heart and movement data with outcomes like hospitalizations, falls, heart health, and overall quality of life.
Up to now, Apple has built a solid reputation for maintaining the privacy of medical data, and we hope that this continues with their latest partnerships. The researchers haven't disclosed who will be eligible to participate in these studies yet, so we’ll need to wait for more information in the Research app.
