For many, mosquitoes and biting insects are a persistent annoyance, and a reliable insect repellent acts as a vital shield against these pests. However, proper application is key, especially when using it alongside other skincare products like sunscreen.
Fortunately, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers guidance on combining sunscreen and insect repellent. Their recommendations include:
When outside, use both sunscreen and insect repellent. Start with sunscreen, then apply bug spray afterward.
Steer clear of combo products that mix sunscreen and bug spray, as sunscreen requires more frequent reapplication than repellent. It’s best to use them separately and adhere to the instructions on each product.
Don’t overapply bug spray. Using excessive amounts won’t enhance or prolong its effectiveness.
Reapply repellent as directed, but if you notice bites, reapply as necessary.
Insect bites are more than just itchy nuisances—they can transmit serious illnesses like the West Nile and Zika viruses. Protecting yourself is crucial. For those of us who are frequent targets, consider DIY pest control methods or alternative strategies to repel bugs without relying solely on repellent.
