Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) refers to a range of symptoms that typically appear a few days to a week before menstruation begins. These symptoms can include bloating, breast tenderness, mood swings, irritability, headaches, and depression. Not every woman experiences all these symptoms, but even one can significantly disrupt daily life during this time.
Aromatherapy can be an effective remedy for PMS. Taking time to enjoy an aromatic bath or indulging in a soothing massage with fragrant oils can provide significant relief. For emotional symptoms like mood swings and depression, clary sage essential oil is highly effective. While oils like neroli, rose, and jasmine can be pricey, their calming and uplifting fragrances are excellent at reducing irritability and promoting emotional balance.
For PMS-related bloating and breast tenderness, oils such as juniper berry, patchouli, grapefruit, and carrot seed are helpful. Birch oil, a natural pain reliever, is also beneficial. If water retention is a concern, juniper berry oil works well. For headaches associated with PMS, try inhaling lavender or marjoram essential oils. To get the best results, start using any PMS remedy a few days before symptoms arise. Also, consider the sections on fatigue, acne, and menstrual cramps for additional relief options.

Mood Oil
- 9 drops geranium oil
- 6 drops chamomile oil
- 3 drops clary sage oil
- 3 drops angelica oil (optional)
- 2 drops marjoram oil
- 2 ounces vegetable oil
Blend the oils together. Angelica oil is optional but adds a heavenly scent, though it may be hard to find. Use this oil daily as a massage oil or add 1 to 2 teaspoons to your bath. This formula can lift your spirits even if you don't have PMS. For added elegance and effectiveness, try adding a couple of drops of neroli, rose, or jasmine. Without the vegetable oil, you can use this blend in a diffuser or carry it with you in a vial for on-the-go use.
Bloating and Headache Relief Oil
- 6 drops lavender oil
- 3 drops juniper berry oil
- 2 drops birch oil
- 1 drop patchouli oil (optional)
Mix these oils together and use as a massage oil, add 1 to 2 teaspoons to your bath, or 1 teaspoon to a foot bath. If you dislike the scent of patchouli, feel free to omit it, as its fragrance can be overpowering.
