If you know a runner, I’ve got the perfect gift idea for them. If you’re a runner yourself, I’ve got the perfect suggestion for what you should ask your mom for Christmas. And even if a gift-giving holiday isn’t in the near future, it’s still important to know about the game-changing water-resistant running shoes. They’re available, maybe even on sale, and they’ll completely transform your running life.
I speak from personal experience. Not long ago, my birthday was approaching, and I had no clue what to tell my mom I wanted (she kept asking). I was pondering this while jogging on the local track in a cold drizzle, my feet going ‘squish’ with every step. Then, it hit me – Gore-Tex shoes! I’d owned a pair years ago and loved them but never replaced them once they wore out. They felt a little too much of a luxury at the time. Most runners just tough it out with regular shoes and wool socks, so why not manage with that?
Let me tell you why not. Wool socks keep your feet warm, but they don’t keep them dry. If you’ve traveled to a park for your run, you’re likely driving home with soaked feet. You’ll get home, wring out your socks, and pray your shoes dry in time for your next run. Slipping into wet shoes feels as unpleasant as putting on a damp bathing suit. On the other hand, returning from a drizzly run with dry feet is one of life’s simple but extraordinary comforts.
What types of weather are water-resistant shoes ideal for?
Water-resistant shoes excel in light rain or snowy conditions. Unlike regular shoes, which can cause your feet to get wet on a below-freezing day due to melting snow, water-resistant shoes keep your feet dry. They’re perfect for snowy days, light snow accumulation, or rainy weather. Essentially, they’re perfect for most of the winter weather you’ll encounter during a run in Pennsylvania.
What are the limitations of water-resistant shoes?
Water-resistant doesn’t mean waterproof. In shoes made from materials like Gore-Tex, stepping into a puddle that reaches your ankles won’t keep your feet dry. A heavy downpour will likely penetrate the material eventually.
Keep in mind that water-resistant shoes won’t stop rain or snow from entering through the top. If you plan to trek through deep snow, consider adding gaiters or opting for shoes that come with built-in gaiters.
If you’re running in various winter conditions, you might want extra traction on your shoes. You can buy shoes with spikes built in or add your own.
What are the top water-resistant running shoes?
I know you're eager to see my choice, so here they are: the Nike InfinityRN Gore-Tex. (Mine are white.) To be honest, I didn’t do much research and can't claim they’re the absolute best. My main requirements were (1) water-resistant and (2) from Nike, since they always fit me perfectly. These shoes met those needs, and I've had plenty of enjoyable runs in them, even in the rain and snow.
Based on reviews, forum posts, and the feedback from other runners about their go-to weatherproof shoes, I’ve compiled a list of excellent models for you to consider. I’ve linked to one model of each, but be sure to explore for different colors, sizes, and versions for men and women.
Nike Pegasus Trail 5 Gore-Tex
Saucony Peregrine Ice+3
Hoka Clifton 9 GTX TS
Puma Deviate Nitro 3 Winterized
Brooks Ghost 16 GTX
Gore-Tex is a well-known brand that offers breathable, water-resistant fabric, but other brands like Saucony also have their own versions, such as Runshield. Gore-Tex is often shortened to “GTX” in shoe model names, so it's useful to look for that when shopping for shoes. Many of these shoes come with high-traction outsoles, which help reduce the risk of slipping on wet surfaces.
