Streamer’s fatigue—the endless cycle of switching between apps to decide what to watch—is a genuine struggle. Another common issue is finding something online you want to watch but not knowing where it’s available. While tech giants like Apple and Google have attempted to tackle this problem without success, Plex, the underdog media server, might have finally cracked the code.
The new Discover feature, currently in public beta, allows users to search, add, and stream movies or TV shows across various platforms. With Plex, you can now manage a single, unified watchlist that syncs across all your devices. When you select a title, the app displays all the streaming options available. Choosing to watch on Hulu, for example, will open the Hulu app and start playback instantly, thanks to advanced deep-linking technology.
Once you update the Plex app, a welcome screen will prompt you to customize your preferences. From there, you can select the streaming services you’re subscribed to and tailor your experience.

Here’s how it works: When you search for content, a new section labeled “Watch from these locations” will appear. Select your preferred streaming service to begin playback. Additionally, you can use the “Add to Watchlist” button to save the title to your Plex watchlist. Your watchlist is always accessible via the “Watchlist” tab on the home screen.
Another benefit of Plex’s universal watchlist is its ability to track where a movie or TV show is currently available. If a show moves from HBO Max to Hulu, for instance, it will remain on your watchlist without any disruption.
If you missed the initial setup, navigate to Settings > Streaming Services to select your subscribed apps. Currently, this feature is in public beta, so if it’s not available to you yet, it will be soon. Keep in mind that, as a public beta, there may be some initial bugs and minor issues to iron out.
