How to Make Fall Patchwork Quilted Wall Hanging Pattern

Instructions for Creating the Fall Patchwork Quilted Wall Hanging Pattern:

Begin by assembling sections 1 and 2. Cut one 8.25 x 7.25-inch rectangle from the cat background fabric. From the fence background, cut one 6.75 x 7.25-inch rectangle. Join these rectangles along the 7.25-inch sides, placing the fence background piece on the right.

Step 2

Match half-triangle sets with right sides facing each other and sew to form squares. Combine different triangle sets to achieve a patchwork appearance. Press the seams to one side. Sew all five squares together end-to-end. Press the seams upward.

Construct sections 4 and 5. Cut one 11.375 x 16.125-inch rectangle from the scarecrow background fabric. From the pumpkin background, cut one 14.5 x 4.125-inch rectangle. Attach section 3 (patchwork) to section 4 (scarecrow background) along the 16.125-inch sides, placing the patchwork on the left. Press the seams toward the scarecrow background. Sew sections 3 and 4 to section 5 (pumpkin background) along the 14.5-inch sides, positioning the pumpkin background at the bottom. Attach sections 1 and 2 to the top of sections 3 and 4. Press the seams upward.

Prepare the checkerboard border. Cut five 45 x 1.5-inch strips from the scarecrow background fabric. From the medium to dark checkerboard fabrics, cut five 45 x 1.5-inch strips. From the corner square fabric, cut six 2.5-inch squares and two 4.5 x 2.5-inch rectangles.

To create the checkerboard, sew one medium to dark strip to each scarecrow background strip lengthwise. Cut these strips into 1.5-inch sections. Assemble four checkerboard strips, each consisting of 11 squares. Mix fabrics to achieve a patchwork effect, ensuring each strip starts and ends with dark squares on top and light squares on the bottom. Additionally, make four checkerboard strips with six squares each. Two strips should begin with dark and end with light squares on top, while starting with light and ending with dark squares on the bottom. The other two strips should start with light and end with dark squares on top, beginning with dark and ending with light squares on the bottom.

Attach the longer checkerboard strips to the ends of each 4.5 x 2.5-inch corner square rectangle. Sew the shorter checkerboard strips to the opposite sides of two 2.5-inch corner squares. Add one 2.5-inch square to each end of the top and bottom checkerboard strips. Refer to the step 8 diagram for the correct arrangement of light and dark checkerboard squares.

Layer the front, batting, and back; then baste them together. Using transparent thread, machine quilt along the seams around background blocks, borders, and patchwork triangles. Quilt around the edges of all appliqué shapes with the machine. With black thread, machine quilt approximately 1/8 inch from the edge of the coveralls and hand-stitch around the coverall patches. Cut three x 45-inch binding strips. Refer to How to Quilt for instructions on attaching the binding to the quilt.
