Just a month after several Skippy peanut butter varieties were recalled due to concerns about metal fragments being mixed in with the chunks, Mars Wrigley is facing a similar issue.
In this situation, the confectionery company has voluntarily recalled 13 of its products, including some from well-known brands like Skittles, Starburst, and Life Savers, due to the possibility of thin metal pieces being present, as confirmed in a press release shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Here’s what you need to know.
What’s the reason behind the recall of Skittles gummies?
Since 1994, Skittles has invited consumers to “taste the rainbow.” While it’s unclear what the rainbow tastes like, we’re fairly certain it doesn’t include metal. So when customers started reporting that gummy versions of Skittles, Starburst, and Life Savers contained a “very thin metal strand” either embedded in the candy or loose in the bag, Mars Wrigley initiated a voluntary recall of 13 products from these brands.
According to a press release from Mars Wrigley, as of Friday, May 13, the company had not received reports of any illnesses or injuries related to the recalled candy, which was produced by a third-party manufacturer and distributed in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The company also stated it would collaborate with retailers to remove the affected products from store shelves.
Which items are included in the recall?
In the United States, the recalled products consist of Skittles Gummies, Starburst Gummies, and Life Savers Gummies listed in the tables below. If you’ve bought any of these items, check for a 10-digit manufacturing code on the back of the package. The first three digits of this code will indicate whether the product is part of the recall.

What should you do if you've purchased the recalled candy?
If you've bought any of the recalled gummies, avoid consuming them. Mars Wrigley recommends discarding the products, but before doing so, take photos of both the front and back of the package. This will serve as proof of purchase if you need to request a refund or replacement.
While the company has not yet provided detailed instructions on how to obtain a refund for the recalled products, they advise consumers with questions to reach out by calling 1-800-651-2564 or visiting the 'Contact Us' page on their website.
