Colgate-Palmolive has initiated a voluntary recall of 4.9 million bottles of Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaner due to potential bacterial contamination. The company explains that the recall affects certain multipurpose cleaners because “the preservative was not added at the required levels during production. Insufficient preservative increases the risk of bacterial growth in the affected products.”
The recalled cleaning products may harbor Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens, bacteria commonly found in soil and water. Individuals with weakened immune systems, external medical devices, or pre-existing lung conditions are at risk of infection, which may necessitate medical treatment, according to the recall notice. Exposure can occur through inhalation, eye contact, or skin wounds. Those with robust immune systems typically remain unaffected. No illnesses have been reported so far.
Which Fabuloso products are included in the recall?

The UPC code is located on the back of the bottle, just below the barcode (view an example here). The recalled Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaners come in these scents: Lavender, Refreshing Lemon, Passion of Fruits, Spring Fresh, and Ocean.
According to the CPSC’s recall announcement, the affected cleaner bottles were sold at major retailers such as Amazon, Dollar General, Family Dollar, The Home Depot, Sam’s Club, and Walmart across the country between December 2022 and January 2023. What should you do with the recalled bottles?
The CPSC advises immediately discontinuing use of the recalled Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaners and contacting the company for a full refund or a free replacement. To claim your refund or replacement, take a photo of the UPC and lot code, then complete this form. The CPSC also recommends discarding the bottles with the cleaner still inside (do not pour it out elsewhere).
