I understand the temptation of something simple, playful, and practically free, but here’s my advice: it’s not wise to create a sunburn tattoo for yourself, nor should you allow your children to do so either.
The concept is simple: place a sticker on your skin, bask in the sun until you’ve got a sunburn, and when you remove the sticker, the paler skin beneath reveals a semi-permanent design. It's a fun idea, and I totally get the appeal!
However, to pull it off, you essentially need to give yourself a sunburn (or at least a noticeable tan). We've all had our share of sunburns, but the risk is real. Each burn adds to your lifetime risk of skin cancer. According to Cancer Research UK, just getting sunburned once every two years can triple your risk of melanoma.
It's not the pink hue itself that poses a danger, but rather the sun exposure—so if you're a bit more cautious and aim for a tan instead of a burn, you're still not out of the woods. Will a single sunburn (or suntan) tattoo be fatal? No. But deliberately doing it is unwise. If you love the look, you can always use a sticker and fake a tan with sunless tanner.
