While you might not always be able to tell if a fresh raspberry contains traces of mold before eating it, a recent recall highlights the risk of contamination in frozen raspberries as well. Exportadora Copramar Ltda., a Chilean company, is voluntarily recalling over a thousand cases of James Farm frozen raspberries due to potential Hepatitis A contamination, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA's testing found traces of the Hepatitis A virus in the affected fruit. Hepatitis A can last for weeks or months and typically shows symptoms within 15 to 50 days of exposure. Common symptoms include fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, dark urine, and pale stools. In rare instances, individuals with severe pre-existing conditions or compromised immune systems may experience liver failure. A vaccination within two weeks of exposure can prevent the illness, according to the FDA's report.
Which frozen raspberries are included in the recall?

These raspberries are packaged in 10-pound cartons labeled with the James Farm brand and a 'Best if used by' date of June 14, 2024. An image of the box is available from the FDA. The affected batch has been removed from Restaurant Depot and Jetro locations, and the retailers are reaching out to impacted customers. As of now, there have been no reports of illness, according to the FDA.
What steps should you take if you think you have consumed the contaminated raspberries?
If you believe you’ve purchased the recalled frozen raspberries, discard any remaining product or return it to the store for a full refund. If you suspect you may have eaten them, the FDA recommends consulting your healthcare provider or local health department to determine if a vaccination is necessary. If you are experiencing symptoms, contact them immediately.
