Image Credit: Roy Rochlin/Getty ImagesBobbi Brown has been a constant presence in my life for as long as I can recall. I admired her transformative makeovers on the Oprah Winfrey Show, and her Makeup Manual became my go-to guide early in my career as a beauty editor in New York City. When I got the chance to speak with her after her keynote at the first-ever Travel + Leisure World’s Best Summit in July, I made sure to wear Jones Road makeup and captured every insight from the legendary makeup artist, entrepreneur, boutique hotel owner, hip-hop dancer, and proud grandmother.
What’s your current favorite beauty item?
BB: "Being a grandmother is my absolute joy; it’s my favorite role in life."
What’s the most common makeup mistake people make?
BB: "In my opinion, the biggest mistake is not wearing enough makeup or using the wrong kind. Many clients prefer a natural look but struggle to achieve it. My goal is to train my makeup artists to create a 'no-makeup' makeup effect. This involves brightening under the eyes, adding a touch of blush, and using powder for oily skin—but only the right products, like those from Jones Road, which avoid a heavy, cakey appearance. Selecting textures that suit your skin type is crucial, especially as your skin changes over time. Traditional makeup often looks too heavy, so it’s essential to find products that enhance your natural beauty without looking overdone."
What adjustments should women over 40 make to their beauty routines?
BB: "Surprisingly, don’t shy away from moisturizers. Many people skip them, leading to dry, cakey skin. On days when my skin isn’t at its best, I use an Oil Stick all over my face, and it instantly improves my appearance. It adds a healthy glow and much-needed hydration. Often, when you don’t look your best, it’s because you’re tired or dehydrated. Drinking water and applying facial oil can work wonders. For those with combination or oily skin, focus the oil on your cheeks. Since my skin is very dry, I apply it everywhere."
What sets Jones Road products apart from others?
BB: "Many people aren’t aware that the Face Pencils have a clear base, which prevents them from looking chalky or unnatural on your skin. Even men can use them to cover blemishes without it being obvious they’re wearing makeup. Traditional products often have an opaque base with tint layered on top, which can leave a white, unnatural finish—like applying Pepto Bismol to your face."
What’s your go-to concealer technique?
BB: "I prefer using a concealer that’s one shade lighter than your foundation to brighten the area. For most people, one shade works, but adding a neutralizer to the deepest areas can lift and brighten the under-eye region. I’m all about simplicity, but using two pencils in this way can make a huge difference."
Which beauty trends do you find particularly frustrating?
BB: "I can’t comprehend why people apply concealer to the outer corners of their eyes. I only use it where there’s darkness. It’s frustrating to see content creators using it to 'lift' without addressing the actual dark areas. Always bring it right up to the lash line. I’ve never liked contouring because it highlights perceived flaws and often looks like dirt on the face. Instead, I prefer using bronzer and highlighter to let your face’s natural structure shine."
How do you react when brands replicate your products?
BB: "I take it as a compliment because it means I’ve created something remarkable. Honestly, many brands try to replicate the Miracle Balm, but they’re nowhere near close to getting it right."
Which brands do you think are excelling in the beauty industry?
BB: "In beauty, I’m obsessed with Vacation—they’re doing an incredible job. I initially thought the founder was a 60-year-old woman, but it turns out he’s a 30-year-old guy with a background in advertising."
Who inspires you the most in the beauty world?
BB: "I really admire Naomi Watts. She’s one of the few celebrities who hasn’t altered her face with procedures, and to me, that’s the epitome of true beauty."
What’s your opinion on cosmetic injections?
BB: "I’m not a fan of them."
Which beauty treatments do you support or enjoy?
BB: "I use lasers, and my top choice is Sofwave, which I’ve used on my face and neck. I also tried a treatment called Heroic, which removes spots from your arms, and I plan to do it again."
What’s your signature scent?
BB: "I created a fragrance called Shower, which has a fresh, just-out-of-the-shower scent. I also keep Je Reviens by Worth on my dresser—it’s what my Aunt Alice wore, and I adore it."
What inspired you to pursue a career in beauty?
BB: "My mom was always glamorous and deeply passionate about beauty. I’m quite different from her, but even though I love beauty, she took glamour to another level."
What’s the latest news about upcoming Jones Road products?
BB: "I’m developing a sunscreen because I haven’t found one I truly love yet. Here’s my makeup bag. [Cue my excitement as she reveals her Stasher bag filled with her personal makeup collection.] Want a sneak peek at next week’s launch? We’re introducing a palette of Miracle Balms, featuring three options: a tint, a blush, and a highlighter in each."
Note: The palettes will be available starting 7/23 for $32 each, exclusively at Jones Road stores and JonesRoadBeauty.com.
Jones Road BeautyWhat’s the most valuable business advice you can share?
BB: "Don’t be difficult. Be kind, stay grounded, and genuinely care about what you do. I still pour my heart into everything—I handle the makeup, style every Jones Road photoshoot, and even art direct them. Sometimes, I even pick up jewelry from Amazon to complete the look."
