Checking your credit report frequently is essential. If you notice an error, disputing it seems like the next logical step. But before you jump to it, requesting a verification might be worth considering.
As reported by Credit.com, many people rush into disputes when a simple verification could solve the issue instead:
Randy Padawer, a consumer education expert from Credit.com partner Lexington Law, points out that many individuals initiate disputes prematurely, without first considering verifications as an option.
Both Equifax and TransUnion give consumers the option to request general item verification before beginning the formal dispute process,” Padawer explains. Item verification asks creditors or credit bureaus to confirm that the information on your credit report is correct, fair, and supported by proper evidence. “Most of the cases we handle for clients start with item verification requests,” Padawer added.
If you find a negative item that seems like an obvious mistake, requesting a verification first might save you time and trouble. For further details, check out their complete post.
