Whether you're engaged in a debate or simply trying to gain someone's trust, beginning your statements with 'to be honest' can undermine your credibility. Here's why it's best to avoid it.
It may seem harmless, but this common phrase can gradually erode any trustworthiness you're working to establish. As Neil Patel points out on Entrepreneur:
When individuals feel the need to declare their honesty, it subtly diminishes their personal credibility. What message does this send about you? Are you usually dishonest? Is it necessary to remind others of your honesty? The phrase 'to be honest' can raise doubts about your credibility.
People typically use this phrase when they want to emphasize their bluntness, but in such cases, simply saying 'to be blunt' works better. Otherwise, 'to be honest' can become just as ingrained a habit as saying 'so' or 'um.'
