It's widely recognized that physical activity enhances mental well-being, helping to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, if you're seeking a workout that truly uplifts your spirits, consider becoming part of a team.
Being part of a team or a tightly-knit training group offers more than just motivation during workouts. When I was involved in roller derby, I never struggled to go to the gym alone because I was driven by the knowledge that my teammates relied on me. I was also aware that they were putting in the effort on their off days, as we were all contributing to building something powerful and cohesive together.
Additionally, it’s incredibly rewarding to surround yourself with people who share your passions, whether it’s soccer or pottery. Having friends who care about the same things as you do naturally boosts happiness. A recent study published this year revealed:
The gap in mental health challenges between individuals engaged in popular (team-based) sports and those who don’t exercise was comparable to the gap between individuals with a household income difference exceeding US$25,000.
It appears that happiness can indeed be purchased with money. However, joining a team or training group can provide you with similar benefits at a much lower cost.
