Brewing coffee using a French press offers a delightful experience, combining hands-on effort with the reward of a rich, full-bodied cup. This method is also an affordable and convenient way to make coffee, as French presses are inexpensive and easy to find. Additionally, their compact design makes them a stylish addition to any kitchen, and unlike combination bean grinders and coffee makers, they help save valuable counter space. However, mastering the French press can be trickier than it seems. While the process is simple, paying attention to a few crucial details ensures a well-balanced and satisfying cup of coffee. Below, we’ll guide you through the steps to create a morning brew you’ll eagerly anticipate.
- For optimal results, choose coarsely ground coffee for your French press. Pre-ground coffee is often too fine, so grinding whole beans yourself is recommended. Aim for a consistency similar to kosher salt. (Many coffee grinders feature a coarse setting, but if yours doesn’t, you can adjust manually.)
- The coffee-to-water ratio plays a key role in achieving the perfect brew. A common ratio is 1:15, meaning 1 gram of coffee for every 15 grams (or milliliters) of water. Experiment with this ratio to suit your taste and the coffee variety. Using a kitchen scale ensures precise measurements.
- Water temperature is critical for brewing. Too hot, and the coffee will taste bitter; too cold, and the flavor won’t fully develop. The ideal range for a French press is between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit—just below boiling. For precision, consider using an electric kettle with temperature controls.

Step-by-Step Guide
Heat the Water
Bring water to a boil, then let it cool until it reaches a temperature between 195 and 205 degrees.
Measure the Coffee
Use a kitchen scale to measure the appropriate amount of coffee. For a 34-ounce French press, add 65 grams of coarsely ground coffee to the bottom of the press.
Pour Water and Steep
Add 1 liter of hot water to the coffee grounds, stirring gently with a long spoon to ensure even saturation. Place the lid on the French press, but do not press the plunger yet. Set a timer for 4 minutes to allow the coffee to steep.
Press Down the Plunger
Once the timer ends, press the plunger down steadily and firmly to filter out the coffee grounds from the brewed liquid.
Serve the Coffee
Transfer the freshly brewed coffee into your favorite mug and savor every sip!
