For decades, her name has been synonymous with ‘beautiful.’ However, as she shares in an interview with Mytour, beauty can take many forms and isn’t confined to youth—despite society's common belief otherwise. In her forthcoming book, *Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old*, releasing on January 14, she dives into themes of aging, societal pressures to maintain youth, and the valuable lessons she imparts to her children.
The book starts with a touching scene of Shields strolling down the street with her daughters, Grier and Rowan. Interestingly, although Brooke is the famous one, it’s her daughters who garner attention. Both attend Wake Forest University in North Carolina, where Grier is carving out a career as a model, and Rowan is pursuing a future in broadcast journalism and television presenting. The comparison to their mother is inevitable. As Shields recalls, 'When Rowan was a baby, people would say, 'Oh my God, you don’t look like your mother. How come you don’t look more like your mother?' In fields where appearances matter, Brooke chooses her words carefully when discussing beauty with her daughters.'
'I don’t hesitate to tell them they’re beautiful, because they truly are, at least from a mother’s perspective! I’m entitled to that; it’s my right,' she explains. 'However, there’s a nuance. I remind them that beauty is subjective—it means different things to different people and cultures. And beauty is just one aspect of who you are. It’s part of your unique identity.'
Such a sweet—and truthful!—lesson. The 59-year-old also shares, 'When I look at my daughters—everything is higher, firmer, smoother. I know it’s attractive, and it sells, but I want my girls to *not* fear growing older like I have.'
