'Bumpit' Ponytails Were a Major Trend at the Golden Globes—Here's How to Recreate the Look at Home

Do you remember the iconic 'bumped ponytail' from the ‘90s? Well, it’s officially making a comeback, at least according to the Golden Globes. Voluminous updos were the stars of the 2025 Golden Globes, with a modern twist on the classic bouffants of the past.

"For Nicole's hairstyle, we drew inspiration from the legendary looks of the 1960s and 1970s, with a hint of the Studio 54 era," says celebrity stylist Adir Abergel, referencing Nicole Kidman’s Babygirl bouffant. "Nicole's dress has a gorgeous open back, so we aimed to create a look that would showcase that feature while also enhancing Nicole’s stunning hair."

Kidman wasn’t the only actress flaunting an architectural updo that evening. "Matlock" star Kathy Bates wore an ultra-puffed, wavy ponytail, while Golden Globes nominees Angelina Jolie and Margaret Qualley also wore flowing hair with voluminous, lifted poufs.

If you think you don't have enough hair for a bold hairdo, don't fret. Abergel created this glamorous style using hair extensions, particularly BELLAMI's Silk Seam clip-ins. "Using the right products to keep the look intact for hours is crucial," Abergel shared on Instagram Stories. "For me, extensions are key to achieving these looks."

How to Achieve the Iconic "Bumpit" Bouffant

1. Start by using a blow-dry brush to maximize volume. Abergel chose his Denman Brush and Kristin Ess Soft Volume Blow Dry Brush to tame Kidman’s natural curls.
2. Gather all your hair into a tight ponytail.
3. Add BELLAMI Hair 18” Silk Seam Clip-In Hair Extensions (Abergel used Golden Hour for Kidman) to the crown and back of your head to enhance thickness and volume.
4. Use a curling iron like the 2 inch Kristin Ess Titanium Curling Iron to add soft curls to the hair ends.
5. To create the voluminous bump, use a brush and hairspray to backcomb only the crown area of the ponytail. You can also use a hair bump to add volume if needed.
