Similar to collagen, oxygen levels diminish with age, leading to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and a loss of skin's natural plumpness and elasticity.
While we fully support embracing aging, for those looking to reduce its visible effects, oxygen-infused skincare products and facials have gained traction, promising a range of skin benefits. But are these treatments truly effective? Dermatologists reveal the science behind these claims and explain how oxygen impacts our skin.
Benefits of Oxygen for the Skin
According to Andrei Gherghina, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and co-founder of Oceans Dermatology, oxygen plays a vital role in transporting crucial nutrients to skin cells. “This enhances skin repair and stimulates collagen production, which is essential for preserving the skin’s youthful elasticity and firmness. When the skin gets sufficient oxygen, it appears more radiant, healthier, and full of life,” he explains.
Does Oxygen Help Skin to 'Breathe'?
Dr. Gherghina clarifies that the concept of ‘skin breathing’ is figurative rather than literal. “Our skin doesn’t breathe like our lungs do, by exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide. However, it relies on oxygen delivered through blood circulation to maintain its health,” he states. “In this way, skin that receives ample oxygen can be considered healthy and ‘breathing.’”
Do Oxygen Skincare Treatments Work?
Geeta Yadav, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of FACET Dermatology, suggests that oxygen facials are more impactful than oxygen-based skincare products. “Oxygen facials involve the direct application of oxygen gas, making them the most effective way to utilize this ingredient,” she explains.
Oxygen Facials
Dr. Gherghina notes that oxygen facial treatments deliver high levels of oxygen directly to the skin, promoting rejuvenation and hydration. This process helps achieve a more youthful and glowing complexion.
“Clinical studies indicate that applying oxygen to the skin can alleviate mild to moderate acne, eczema, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. It also enhances skin hydration and texture while reducing irritation,” says Geeta Yadav, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of FACET Dermatology. “Anecdotal evidence suggests oxygen treatments may diminish fine lines and boost skin radiance, likely due to improved hydration levels, which smooth out fine lines.”
Oxygen Beauty Products
Regarding oxygen-infused beauty products, both dermatologists remain skeptical. “Oxygen is a gas, and any gas released from serums or moisturizers is fleeting, often due to foaming or bubbles that vanish quickly. The only genuine oxygen in skincare comes from water—H2O, where the O represents oxygen,” explains Dr. Yadav. “While there’s no harm in trying oxygen-based products, remember that their effects are short-lived.”
A Comprehensive Approach
Oxygen facials and oxygen-infused products can complement each other for a more holistic skincare strategy. “Facials deliver an intense, immediate boost of hydration and radiance, while daily-use products help sustain these effects,” says Dr. Gherghina.
However, Dr. Gherghina notes that the results may not be as enduring as those achieved through overall health and lifestyle choices that enhance circulation and oxygen delivery to the skin. “It’s crucial to view these treatments as just one component of a broader skincare routine and health regimen,” he emphasizes.
