Truffles, being rare and difficult to locate, rank among the most costly ingredients globally. A black truffle recently unearthed by a dog named Poppy stands out even in the world of gourmet cuisine. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, this discovery weighs two pounds and is valued at approximately $1000.
During her training, Poppy, a truffle-detecting dog, was exploring Tasmanian Truffles farm in Australia when she stumbled upon the enormous fungi. Her digging skills uncovered a truffle that surpassed any previously found on the farm in its two-decade history.
"It just kept going, and I grew more and more excited," Anna Terry, daughter of Tasmanian Truffles' founder Tim Terry, shared with ABC. Truffles exceeding 500 grams are deemed large, and while this one isn't Australia's biggest, it sets a new record for the farm.
While pigs are often linked to truffle hunting, dogs have emerged as the preferred choice for many farms. Various breeds can be taught to detect the distinct aroma, and unlike certain pigs, they are more inclined to surrender their finds rather than consume them. As Poppy has shown, dogs are equally capable of uncovering the most prized truffles buried underground.
Under typical conditions, a black truffle of this size would fetch around $1000 USD, but its value has diminished during the COVID-19 pandemic. With upscale restaurants worldwide shut down and a scarcity of buyers, the Terrys might have no choice but to enjoy this luxurious truffle as an extravagant homemade dish.
