A chalk line makes it easy to create a perfectly straight line with just a single snap. Browse more images of hand tools. It can be challenging to draw a long, straight line on large flat surfaces like walls. You'll need a guide that stretches several feet. Luckily, a chalk line can help you do this with ease.
How a Chalk Line Works
A chalk line, also known as a chalk reel or chalk box, is a tool with a metal or plastic casing containing powdered chalk and a string line that ranges from 18 to 50 feet. The string has a hook ring at its end, and the case features a rewind crank to retract the line when finished. The tool's pointed end allows it to also serve as a plumb bob.
How to Safely Use a Chalk Line
To create a straight line on a wall, like when putting up wallpaper, gently shake the chalk line case to ensure the chalk is evenly distributed. Attach the hook ring to the top of the wall, then pull the case down to extend the string, making sure the chalked line doesn’t touch the wall yet. Position the line on the second mark, stretch it tight, and release it, letting the line snap against the wall to leave a chalk mark, known as "snapping a line."
The chalk line case can also double as a plumb bob. Hang it from the hook ring and let the line extend to mark a point on the wall directly beneath the hook.
How to Maintain a Chalk Line
Too much tension on the string can cause it to snap. However, the most frequent issue with chalk lines is moisture damaging the dry chalk inside. Replacement chalk powder in white, red, or blue is available at hardware stores.
