Flight prices can change significantly, so it's essential to act quickly when you find a great deal. CheapAir.com's 'When to Buy' tool shows the optimal booking window for affordable flights between two destinations.
CheapAir analyzed over 1.3 billion airfares in the U.S., tracking about 3 million different trips every day throughout the year. They identified that the best time to book a cheap flight is typically between 21 and 122 days before departure.
This period is a prime opportunity for bargain hunters. Within these 90 days, flight prices can change frequently, sometimes even daily. It’s recommended to monitor fares closely during this window and grab a deal when it appears.
They also provided insights on other timeframes for booking.
Peace of Mind
(113 – 196 days before departure): The Peace of Mind window strikes a good balance between flight availability and cost. While travelers typically pay about $20 more than in the Prime Booking Window, they also have a wider selection of flights to choose from.
Push Your Luck
(14 – 20 days before departure): During the 2-3 week period before departure, prices can fluctuate wildly. Depending on demand and seat availability, you may either snag an incredible deal or end up paying a lot more. Popular routes, especially during peak travel times, are less likely to offer discounts during this period.
Hail Mary
(0 – 13 days before departure): In rare instances, the Hail Mary window can offer the lowest fare. However, for tickets purchased 7-13 days in advance, you’ll typically pay an average of $75 more than in the Prime Booking Window. Bookings made 1-6 days before departure can see premiums of up to $200 over the prime window price.
With their new tool, you can get more specific data based on your departure and destination cities. Simply enter both cities, and you’ll see a price trend graph, showing how fares fluctuate over time. Give it a try yourself using the link provided below.
